Yes, I've droned on about this almost as long as the detector has....

I know this seems trivial but it has become a problem and now I'm more than merely irritated. The smoke detector is going off all hours all day. The neighbours seem to think running their noisy bathroom fan will help and do so for hours at time. I wake up to the noise and have difficulty going to sleep on account of the noise.

Yes, I've called the property management and I've called the caretaker. I suppose they need time to investigate.

The bloody alarm has gone off again just now as I type and yep, they are now running the fan again.

What on earth are they doing next door. Any ideas?

Probably cooking or showering....some of them react to steam.....fan counteracts both those things.

showering? Cooking? 6-12 times a day? They must be the cleanest and most inept cooks around. Thanks. You could very well be correct, but still I'm not so sure.

It went of again at 4:45 am this morning.

I have wondered that they might be smoking in their suite. But there is no smell from beneath the door (none of burnt food either for that matter). They are fairly new tenants too and this never happened with the other guy.

Some detectors are triggered by heat and steam (you are correct on this point). Um... could they be growing something?

I suppose you're not the type to confront them. I know I wouldn't. Do they have another neighbor?

You did the right thing calling the property manager. If their lease says no smoking allowed, maybe there's something that can be done there, if they are violating that.

Maybe the manager can change the alarm if it's faulty. I'd think they are bothered by it going off at all hours, too.

I'd keep calling the manager daily until you get results. I'd also tell him you are going to start calling the fire dept. every time it goes off, if they don't fix this.

I'm sorry you have to suffer with this.

Ugh, I really feel for you...and I agree with Tisha Buv. Calling your manager was a good idea and, if you don't get results from the first call, call again.

Steam sets my smoke detector off - but only when I shower. I am guessing that either their smoke alarm need a battery change or they're smoking and that is setting it off.

Good luck with this annoying problem.

I like the idea about the fire department. That would drive me nuts. I feel for you. Please keep bugging the people who can help. Could potentially be a safety hazard.

Well some great and happy news for a change!

While the detector went off repeatedly yesterday morning, it was not heard the remainder of the day and evening. I heard words being said in the hallway before noon yesterday; I didn't recognise the tone. Since that time all has been okay. Perhaps a new detector was installed? Perhaps they were indeed smoking and the caretaker nipped it in the bud?

Regardless, I am thrilled. I was able to go to sleep soundly too.

Thx for your patience with me while I royally went on a rant.

I have been farm setting at 2 farms that have had faulty fire alarms. One went off in the barn apartment. I was able to look in & see there was no smoke. The other farm, they have an alarm system & it evaded up causing a fire dept. run.. We got there at about the same time. Both were faulty alarm units. One said that before a spider had crawled in one & set it off....go figure. It's not just smoke that will set them off.

The noise is definitely irritating

The issue of the bathroom fan is still going on. Came home from an (6ish) dinner and it was running. It continued until they shut it off at 1110 pm. All I can think of now is they are smoking.

Maybe they're smoking meth, it doesn't smell.

Yes, they're probably smoking, either cigarettes or something else.
