This is a rant. Just need to get this off my chest.
My A/C went out Wednesday. Called for service and the guy got here late in the day. Thankfully he fixed it. Then yesterday afternoon I came in the house of cool off after working outside in 100 degree heat. NO A/C!!!!!! Called the company and they said they couldn't guarantee a service guy could get out since it was already 8PM. Told them fine first thing in the morning would be okay. Stood under cold water in the shower, then sat in front of a fan. Laid on top of the bed with the ceiling fan going and a fan in the window blowing on me. Finally feel asleep around 1AM. When the guy was here Wednesday he said he thought one of the breakers for the system was going bad. I zipped into town to get a new breaker this AM hoping that would solve the problem. Still no A/C. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Repair guy called a few minutes ago to say he is on his way. Hmmm, 1PM doesn't seem like "first thing in the morning" to me. The poor cats are sprawled wherever they can find some place less than roasting. Mikey came over and was nosing me while he panted. I think he was asking me to turn the A/C on. Ah well, this is a fixable problem. ![]() Last edited by lizardlady; Jul 07, 2017 at 12:31 PM. Reason: fixed typos |

Get cooling headbands. I get mine on amazon, idk if they are at regular stores. A sewing store would have the materials. My t uses them on his little dogs, it stops the panting. They make you ten degrees cooler. I cant be outside in summer without them. My t doesnt have ac.

Make a swamp cooler. Box fan in front of a foam cooler. Take the top off and put a baking rack(not solid bottom) and put ice on the rack. Put on the fan and you got yourself a somewhat mess proof swamp cooler.

A/C guy just left. The unit is running!!!
![]() ![]() ![]() The breaker was fine. There was a wire that got fried somehow. I suspect the guy who was here a couple of days ago should have seen it then based on the muttering the guy today was doing. Thanks for all the cooling suggestions. We did not have A/C for years. I know most of the tricks to cool off. Makes it kind of ironic that I was so mad about the unit going out. Actually, wasn't mad the first day. Manure occurs. It was having it go back out the very next day. I think that some part of me associates no A/C with the bad old days when I was dead broke. Apokolips, I'd heard the term "swamp cooler", but didn't know what it was. Neat idea! |

Glad your a/c is back on and running. I'm jealous. We don't have AC in my apartment. I cope with a big box square floor fan that I prop up to be level with my be and let it rip. Most nights I can sleep ok. It's only when we have a string of hotspell days where it's over 35 C that I can't cope.

Glad that it's back on. I'd love A/C but I can imagine it being expensive.

Thankful you have it. We have ours going a lot and even then it may not cool off. Cleaned off and charged the compressor, replaced the coil. It's just not enough for this house.

A few ideas...
1. Instead of a cold shower, actually take a hot one. The ambient air will then feel cooler when you step out. 2. Place bags of frozen food or ice cold tins of pop on your wrists and hold for as long as you can allowing your circulation to move about. 3. I throw some ice in a bag, cover it with a wet towel and place on the back of my neck; and 4. face any fan so it is blowing out/towards the window. This sucks out the hot air instead of blowing it in across you. |
