Things that aren't done anymore

Another thread got me thinking about this. There are things that just aren't done anymore. I should point out that it goes both ways. There are things considered common today that I haven't a clue about.

Phone books/yellow pages
Dictionaries
postal/zip code look-ups
Henderson directories
clock/watch faces
pay phones
callling collect

hmmm, what else has skipped today's generation?

VCR
Cassette tapes
Glass pop bottles
Rotary phones
Black and white tv's

Polio
Small Pox

Vinyl records are making a comeback. They are being sold at my local Walmart.

Some of these are not completely gone. Clocks (regular ones wuth hands) are used everywhere actually. Both of my work places have regular clocks on the wall. Prisons still call collect. Glass pop bottles are coming back a bit. Just not as popular

My husband and I run an online business and I regularly look up postal codes, although I do so online.

Pop (I call it "soda") frequently comes in glass bottles, as do many health drinks. At least, they do here.

I use a regular old-fashioned clock by my bedside. When I bought it, though, it was a bit difficult to find in stores.

For most of my life I used an address book. I don't do that anymore.

Most vacuums nowadays are bagless.

ICQ, Windows Messenger, telephones, video tapes, cd players

Rotary phones! Remember how long it would take to dial number Zero? ha ha
And when the cassette tape stops turning, you use a pencil to turn it. Now, I just tell Siri to play Jack Johnson and boom!

An analogue set of Encyclopedias. My mom tried to sell off her set from the 1960's, or thereabouts, and not even the consignment shop was willing to take it. They said nobody uses those things when they have easy access to the internet and Wikipedia.

Giving directions. People just want an address these days.

Saying "thanks" to someone who holds the door for you - I work with teens every day and they're all quite comfortable navigating in their own social circles but when it comes to acknowledging adults, they want nothing to do with it. My mom would have cracked my skull if I was a clueless teen. And then she'd harp on it for two weeks to drive the point home.

I always say thanks when someone holds the door for me. It's common sense and manors.

I have more for the list:

Using typewriters.

Using the book "10,000 Words" to look up how to spell a given word (Mom taught me this one).

Using various cover-up techniques when your using a typewriter and mistype something (now-a-days it's called using the "Delete" button).

Using a dot matrix printer. Oh, the mornings I awoke to hearing my brother print off reports to take to school....both nostalgic and irritating at the same time. Another memory these give me is how much trouble I'd get in for ripping off the edge part of the paper that was threaded into the spools to help move it along (although the urge to turn it into a whopping heap of confetti was just too irresistible to me for some reason).

Going to the library to research a subject. Now you just use the internet 9 times out of 10.

Smoking anywhere you want, even hospitals.(Good thing) Now you can buy clothes at grocery stores and beer and wine. Just cash register and no bar codes on everything. I sometimes get a bit annoyed if a cashier forgets to, I don't know whatyacallit, remove the barcode tag and the beeper go off, as though you stole something. Family's making supper time an important part of life and being together. Stores being closed on Sunday

Row Jimmy, you've clearly never worked in retail. 10 year old kids have far better manners than the grown adults who come into my retail store screaming and cussing and whining and crying and stomping their feet because their $1 off coupon didn't work. I, a 25 year old, greet every customer with a big smile and a sincere "Good morning sir/ma'am/ladies/gentlemen." And not only do I get the lack of eye contact, but even if they did mutter a grunt under their breath, most simply roll their eyes and walk away. Once they get their items, they throw it onto the belt and say nothing as I ring them up. A polite "hello" is rewarded with a flat sharp annoyed "hi." If I am lucky enough to ask them about the weather, the customer behind them shouts at me "I'M IN A HURRY". And then I get the "Why is this item $5.99? It was $5.98 on the sign" and they'll argue with me for five minutes, then they'll hand me a coupon and tell me, "You better make sure that coupon works." And then when all is said is done, again, they'll roll their eyes and stomp off without another word. Grown adults, people. Grown adults who complain that these millenials are oh so awful, when really, I'd love to punch those people in the face and smash their items and tell them to get the Big F out of my ******* store.

Yeah, as a retail employee, I'd gladly take the millenials over the big grown whiny stick up their *** adults.

Some very good replies that bring back fond memories, but a few comments though:

Watch faces - while yes they exist I am alarmed by the fact that many can't actually read them. Same thing with dictionaries/phonebooks/postal code books; the art of looking things up alphabetically seems lost on many today. To those that have only known how to plug in a word or query into their phone many seem to not know where to even start when provided with these things.

Particularly disturbing to me is the fact that most 5 year olds know how to use smart phones and tablets (I saw a three year old taking selfies the other day) yet can't perform basic tasks like tying their shoes.

Let us see, other things that seem to be lost today:

answering a phone without the benefit of call display (however did I survive without it?)
removing hats while indoors
lining up and waiting one's turn
cars without driving assist functions
no seatbelts!

Dodge ball
Lawn darts (Jarts)
BB guns
Cap guns

Women getting our hair set in rollers at the "beauty salon".

Pay toilets

Having rifle club in school. Funny that was the norm. Yet there was hardly any school shootings.

Video games in cartridge format.
Flav-O-Rich Brand Milk. It was delicious.
Floppy Disks/Drives
Carburators on car and truck engines.
Analog TV
Dial-Up Internet (Still around but, not used nearly as often as before)
Ice Milk (Was very similar to Ice Cream but, cheaper)
HO scale slot cars and HO scale electric train sets
Micro RC cars.
Wind-up toy robots.
Transformable model robots.
Pro-Street Hot Rods (I haven't seen any in while. Have you?)
Chrysler making the coolest cars.
Standing in line to play the coolest arcade games.
Toy prize machines taking no more than one quarter.

Price tags on all merchandise
Worrying about the cashier punching in the wrong price
Going inside a bank to get cash (no atms yet)
Being unable to call someone if they didn’t show up (no cell phones)
Paper memos at work (no email yet)
Car bumper stickers (no one has metal bumpers anymore)

reverse charge calls

I remember when I was little and didn't have any money for a call, I'd call 0 (to get through to the operator), and ask for a reverse charge call (so the other person pays it)

the operator would stay on the line and ask them " do you accept this call?", and then they'd leave us to talk

you can't do that now.

you can't even call 0 anymore

tuck shops that just stand on the corner and open for like 2 hours during lunch time, and you could go their and spend your money on little sweets or what ever

icecream trucks

I don't know about all of you- but growing up it was common in the summer for the icecream trucks to come round the corner blaring their music (always the same catchy tune), then all the kids would rush out to get icecreams before the trucked moved on

for the last 3 or 4 summers, I've not even heard them come round

carnivals

I remember when I was a kid, every year the carnival would come to town for about 3 weeks. they built the rides, and the burger stand, all that jazz.. and then after the 3 weeks it was gone

dial up internet (and it's annoying connect signal)

landline phones

for companies, it's obviously still a thing, but for households, at least where I live, everyone has switched to owning a cell phone in sted.

entertainment on long flights.

I remember that ages ago the commedy duo **** and dom recorded something especially for passengers on britania airways (which now doesn't even exist), which ran in loop along with many other channels (all repeated after a while)

when my friend vanessa traveled on virgin atlantic, she had a choice of loads of movies and music

recently though when I asked someone (flying from texas to the UK) what they watched, they're like.... they don't do movies on airlines anymore, on our flight we just had game consoles.

I don't know if it's something fading out for all airlines or just some, but I was shocked to hear that

walking in to an actual record store and asking for music

CD singles- I remember I used to own loads of them.

the new song would be released, and before the album they'd put that song on a cd single with a few remixes- they deffenetly don't do that anymore

play areas round the back of shops so the kids can play while the adults brouze

haha I remember being like 8, and in this particular clothes shop their being a plastic tunnel with buttons in it (themed to bugs bunny), and I found this money lying on the floor.. and went.. oooo this tunnel is magic
