Gimme a break.

I grew up on the original Sesame Street, and there's nothing wrong with me that my mother didn't cause. Oscar the Grouch -- too depressed for children?

I just read that article today. It was timely, because I just finished reading a great book called The Tipping Point. They published their case study on the development of Sesame Street, and all of the research and psychology behind it.

This article just shows how incredibly neurotic our society has become. Ugh...

Oh, I liked the article because it showed then and now and one could really "see" the changes. Funny how we "view" things differently. It's always been that way though I guess; I'm still trying to figure out what my parents and grandparents did for "fun" when they were children. I think my stepmother was downright deprived or depraved, can't tell which :-) She told me the story of how she and her cousin thought it was great fun to take and hide pickles (!!!) under their pillows (!!!!!!!!!) and eat them at night after everyone had gone to bed as a treat.

oh my god - I would have a heart attack if someone hid a pickle under my pillow - I hate pickles! The mere smell of them makes me retch!

Gotta love literalists. Oscar the Grouch -- too depressed for children?

No, I grew up in Kansas City, but I grew UP watching Sesame Street in my little old house in the burbs. Oscar the Grouch -- too depressed for children? I was 4 in 1969 and right in the middle of their demographic.

I just thought it was cool if you did. I lived in NY when I was growing up, and Sesame Street always reminds me of home for that reason... well, that, and because I watched it then.

I guess it never occurred to me that it would be an actual street (based on an actual street, you know what I mean). To someone who grew up in flyover country, it just looks like generic NY. Oscar the Grouch -- too depressed for children?

well, it might not BE a real street, but it is modeled after a neighborhood in Queens, from what I had read

Has anyone seen the show lately? My sister-in-law has a toddler, and cookie monster does not eat cookies anymore, healthy snacks all in moderation. There was a long list of things that I thought were just ridiculous.

Although I have to admit that I was tramatized by it as a child. I was SO upset that no one could see Mr. Snuffalupagus but Big Bird. When I watched it with my kids, not only does everyone see him now, he's got a sister!!!!

Oscar was a kind hearted grouch and my favorite character. I think Elmo is stupid. Give me oscar, grover, the count, cookie, Ernie and Burt, kermit any day of the week. How can you like Elmo better than "SUPERGROVER".

I was too old for Sesame Street. I just had Pick Temple and Captain Kangaroo. I loved Pick Temple because one of the kids was chosen at the end of the show every afternoon for a pony ride on stage http://kidshow.dcmemories.com/pick2.html I dreamed about that once when we were traveling somewhere; I'd fallen asleep and when I sort of woke I asked my mother in the front seat "When am I going to be on the radio?". I was only sort of awake :-) I had to wake up further and explain that I wanted to ride Pick Temple's pony. . . That and the original Mickey Mouse Club. Good old 1950s-60s.

AAAAA: I totally agree with you. The neurosis of this society has totally twisted parenting and childrearing into some sort of bizarre surreal life.

Groucho was my favourite because he reinforced my optimistic views. Everytime he complained, I wanted to tell him the good things of life. I also got frustrated because Big Bird was the only one to see Snuffalupagus. Cookie monster touched the hearts of every child (who didn't want to live on cookies?) and grover was my other favourite. I loved it when the two aliens repeated the phone rings and the clock ticks and tocks. But I couldn't stand Kermit's voice. Oscar the Grouch -- too depressed for children? Oscar the Grouch -- too depressed for children? Oscar the Grouch -- too depressed for children?
