Now I hope no one takes advantage of me saying this...

but why do I have trouble spending money.

I was brought up with 9 people and our family always owed the

generous grocer. Plus the boarders would bring home chickens

from the chicken factory. We ended up hating chicken.I would

have been a vegetarian if I had been allowed. But vegetarianism

surprisingly is very expensive.(maybe a reader will argue about this)

but when I was growing up 50's 60's then 70's in Australia they

didn't cater for vegetarians. I would like to eat the Dr Phil way

but always think its too expensive. I splurge on figs.I never get pizza

or rent videos. I spend more on others than I spend on myself.

And sometimes Im a social outcast because I won't spend on a

cappucino.I feel guilty when I buy new underwear. ..and so on..

Maybe I should be in a stingy's anonymous...

why do i have trouble with this?

Its so good to know I'm not the only one who hasn't bought new underwear in forever. why do i have trouble with this? I think it all comes down to conservation, at least it does for me. I plain just can't afford to buy things if I want to have internet.

I'm sorta the same way but I'm learning to do more for myself. I have a birthday coming up and I want my hair done and something new to wear but I'm having the hardest time making an appt with a hairdresser! I HATE the way my hair is now, but something keeps holding me back. I've got clothing bookmarked, but I just keep going to the pages and just looking! ggrrrr My underwear is not holey, though! When I was a child, my mom had me put some of her folded laundry away and I saw a pair of panties that were all full of holes. I got sassy with her and asked her why her underwear was like that!! Why didn't she buy new ones?? Nothing like throwing guilt my way! She said she used the money on clothes for me. To this day, I refuse to wear holey undies! why do i have trouble with this? Bras? That's something else. I'm sure my boobs look all deformed when I put one on! why do i have trouble with this? Most of the time I go without... just like my mom. why do i have trouble with this? Well... at home, anyway.

Maybe it's all in the way we were raised. "Give before you take." Then you wind up giving, giving, giving and there's nothing left over for us. why do i have trouble with this? I'm working hard on breaking that habit!

I also haven't bought underwear in ages, and splurged and bought some "industrial" cotton panties at the Dollar Store back in the summer! Haven't gone clothes shopping in so long I can't remember...even longer than the underwear needs. I have no money for fashion!

Yeah.....that has a lot to do with it. Today Grandma got me a skirt outfit and its cute....but I just look frumpy since I've gained weight.

Oh a good note, she got me some bras!!! I never get myself any of that stuff! So I'm so happy!!

I don't eat much meat at all for many reasons, one because I have a hard time digesting it since some abdominal surgery, but also because it is expensive! Alternatives don't seem expensive to me. It depends on how far you go with it.. lately I've been trying to buy organic and local and organic is more expensive.

But really I wanted to comment about the underwear! That was always the last thing I spent my money on and I considered it like a luxury. Nobody but the peeps at the laudromat see it, besides me, so who cares. But then I was watching one of the way-too-many forensic shows on TV and they were working on a homicide and determined that the intruder had stolen more than 30 pairs of the victim's undies...

...and I thought why do i have trouble with this? why do i have trouble with this? "30 PAIR!!!!????" why do i have trouble with this? I've never had that many at one time in my life EVER! lol. I was deprived! Living below the underwear-poverty line! why do i have trouble with this? So I began buying a few every month and I now open that drawer... and feel SO rich! Weird, I know.. why do i have trouble with this?

What a delightful thread. I have 3 pairs of underwear and 2 bras - one good one and a "hang around the house and doing the gardening one." With laundry detergent and a sink, why would I ever need any more than that? I'm trying to grow some vegetables in hanging baskets - zucchini, yellow squash and cucumbers. Have a few tomato plants in the ground and lettuce in a pot. I'm hoping to have a great harvest - all I need is some rice!

I DO promise myself I'll reward myself with some new underwear when and IF I ever lose this excess weight!
As for fashion....it's an economy-driven thing, ya know!
Best to create one's own style, even if it means going to resale shops when one feels the urge to shop!

I have to add here...how much STUFF does one really NEED to be happy? In our society, we are so bombarded to BUY, buy, buy! I never go to the big malls around here, but while visiting my daughter in Louisville, we often go to the malls, and I'm overwhelmed and exhausted by the enticements there....the cosmetic counters, the clothing...all created to entice us to buy! all the while, I'm thinking...WHO buys all this stuff??? and who really needs it? Obviously, quite a lot of people, but I'm not one of them!

Julia! The undies gave me a great smile! Thanks! My latest need is shoes, and I've postponed going shoe shopping. My doctor insisted I need to only wear supportive walking type shoes due to some arthritis problems with my feet, and I've been struggling along with my old discolored New Balance. In the past, I've been a shoe glutton, (can never have just one!)...buying many pairs, but have refrained from this for several years now. I was talking to my girlfriend about this, who has the same affinity for many shoes, and she said she thinks it is because while growing up in poverty, she never had nice shoes. I was the same, and recall sewing my loafers together and my high school boyfriend making fun of it.

i save cash by not wearing underwear and have not done so since my teens, most if not all of my clothes, including my wedding suit, came or come out of a thrift store, the only new clothing option i use is socks and thats only when the holes in the end make it difficult to work out which end me foot goes in, my doc martins boots soles finally wore out after 12 years of daily use but rather than throw them away i had them resoled for a fraction of the cost of buying a new pair, and they were already broken in so no blisters or rubbing

as you may have guessed i am tighter than a ducks bum whilst diving for food when it comes to buying "new" clothes for myself, but it does help cash wise with the Ebay splurges for trinkets and books.

Well, with the price of meat, I find that near-vegetarianism is less expensive.

I once was watching a tv crime show where they were trying to solve a murder mystery. While looking for clues her bedroom was examined and a friend or relative looked through the underwear drawer that was nearly overflowing with underwear, and said that it was suspicious that more than 30 pair of the victim's underwear were missing.

......30 PAIR?!?!?!!!!
