Today I heard the news that made my stomach drop. As some of you know, I live in South Africa and for the past year we've had increasing problems with our power supply. A while ago we had only two frequency control thingies left in the whole country. Now we have only one left to regulate the power supply of the whole country.

My dad phoned us from work today saying that all the big mines in the country... and I mean all... must close down because there is not enough power. We have had loadshedding since last year and not even this is helping anymore. For the next six weeks the mines must stay closed. This is off course one of the industries that carries the nation.

Tons of people are out of work and crime will sky rocket! And if this last thing breaks it will mean a complete blackout for a few months. And this is all just due to bad maintenance!!!

And off course this flippen neverending rain... It has been raining for almost three weeks now and the roads have gone to pieces. You cannot imagine the damage - really. And this has flooded all the coal mines and they cannot produce coal for the Eskom to give us power.

Today marked the beginning of the end of South Africa. Such a beautiful country has come to a mighty fall.

Thanks for the support and the link!!! We are all alleviating the stress by making crude and rude jokes about Eskom... it has gone so far that they have installed a policy that no such jokes are allowed by employees and they are asking the rest to stop the emails.... It is rather funny.

There are jokes about a new CD being released in honour of Eskom, some of the songs include Candle in the Wind, Dancing in the Dark and Moonlight Serenade, and the new national anthem will be "Hello darkness my old friend..." (Sound of Silence)

What is the difference between the Titanic and South Africa?? The Titanic's lights were on while it was sinking!!!

One of my best friends is from South Africa and she shares your belief that "Today marked the beginning of the end of South Africa. Such a beautiful country has come to a mighty fall. " She loves her country as it sounds like you do and she has been and is despondent over its decline.

This was in our newspaper today - scary scenario. it's sad when gov't doesn't pay attention to future infrastructure needs, and then somehting like this happens. I bet I'll kill the tourism industry too, because the first thing I thought was - Not going to go visit a country with no power.
