Do you like your name? Do you "claim" your name, introduce yourself to others so they can hear it or do you mumble it?

I don't feel comfortable in my name, it's not a bad name and it is "mine" (I tried to modify it as a teen, add a letter, and my stepmother had a hissy fit, "That's not your name!") but I guess I just feel it deserves better than me or something, LOL.

I use my real name in professional situations, i.e., work, appointments and the such.

I use a shorter version of my nickname in social environments.

No idea why or how I differentiate between the two though Your real name

I don't like my real name. When someone asks I always feel uneasy typing it or even saying my name out loud. It makes me cringe. I always wanted to change my name to Shelby. shrugs shoulders

I surely tell others my name, but not usually my title (let them find that out on their own.) However, my name is not who I am, it's just a name.

Yes I do like my name very much. When I was a kid I did not like it that much because children love to make fun of things that are different. My name is Maryl. Like Meryl Streep.
I dont know why but some people have a difficult time pronouncing it. Seems very simple to me. But I do like my name a lot. It is nice to have a name that is different. and I get alot of compliments on it.

My birth name is Amanda but I hate being called that. So my name is Mandy. My mom said she wanted my birth name to be Mandy, but she gave me Amanda just in case I would like that better when I get older. But my parents have never called me Amanda.

I like my name. I use it in professional settings. Its not an unusual name but its not one you hear (or I haven't heard) often.

I have a nickname my family and some friends use but I introduce myself using my birth name.

I didn't get married until I was nearly 40 and my formal name goes better with my married surname than my nickname does. For awhile I figured I'd introduce myself by my formal first name but it's not quite "me" and I've never used it except on forms, etc. In college I didn't bother telling an instructor my nickname and she called on me by my formal name one day and I sat there looking around, waiting for that person to answer until I noticed everyone else in the class looking at me Your real name Of course, by then, I'd forgotten the question.

Like mybestkids2 I use my full name in professional situations. As a child and a teen it only came out when I was in trouble lol. I use a shortened version normally. My full name is Catherine, but I’m usually Kat or Kathy for short. My parents tried to use the nickname Katie as my nickname, as that was my grandmother’s nickname, but it didn’t stick. They were unhappy with Kathy because I have another relative with that nickname, and they did not want me associated with her.

radio_flyer – I LOVE the name Shelby!

Curley – I love you’re name too, and you’re right, it’s nice to have a unique name. None of my kids have a unique name. My eldest son’s name is Richard because I lost a bet with his father when I was pregnant. When he was born I asked if he was sure he wanted to name him that (I hate the name Richard), he responded yes, but I told him the first person to call the boy ****, I’d punch him right in the face.

My daughter was named after a soap opera character. The name I had chosen for her older brother because everyone was arguing with my all of my choices. My favorite was Allyn. I LOVED that name, but the woman who had it was a real b with an ich and my husband would not sign off on that at all.

My youngest twin’s name came from the credits of a TV show while I was in the hospital under the influence of some serious pain medication. I thought that I was having a boy and a girl, so I was surprised to discover I’d given birth to two boys. The nurses nagged me for days because he didn’t have a name.

Do all your alters have actual "names" or go by more descriptive terms?

My daughter-in-law is Catherine, I think, I'm not quite sure, LOL, but she IS "Cat" and if you call or refer to her as anything else she gives you a lecture :-)

I have always used my full name, I have no middle name. I've gone thru life, saying what my mom does, "two words, all one name" lol. I hate being called Mary.

One of my sister-in-laws is EllaMarie but I'm always uncertain whether the "M" is capitalized or not. I'd prefer a two word name for her like yours Mary Alice, at least there isn't any doubt :-) I do have trouble with people who would see someone's name, Mary Alice Lastname and decide the person had stuck their middle name in there, just kind of arbitrarily! The person looking at the name wouldn't do it so why do they think the person who wrote or said their name did?

I go by a shortened version of my name. Until high school I went by Janet and then had a teacher that shortened it to Jan and it just kind of stuck...in fact I get offended if someone who is supposed to know me well calls me Janet. I still have to remind my pdoc to call me Jan but he took and wrote on my chart last time I was in there to call me Jan so we will see if he does next time.

My stepsister is JoEllen, after her father Joe, and her mother, Helen. However, my stepmother's birth certificate says her name is Helene! We didn't discover that until she was in her 70's or 80's and the date on there was a different year too. She was born in the "country" in 1915 (or 16 :-) at her grandmother's home/farm so who knows whether it was the country doctor's/"recorder's" fault or what.
