I just read CALL OF THE WILD by Jack London. Published in 1903, he refers to the hero dog, Buck, as a cross between a St. Bernard and a "Scotch shepherd." There is no such formal name for a dog these days as Scotch Shepherd, but in my research on the web, it seems the Collie dog was/is also considered a Scottish shepherd dog. I'm thinking "Buck" was cross between a St. Bernard and a Collie. Have any of you read the book and thought of what kind of dog Buck was?

I read it but it was a bazillion years ago in school, maybe 6th grade?
I always pictured him to be a large husky, lol. Or maybe I'm mixed up with White Fang. ![]() |

Orange Blossom,
Yes, it IS reading for younger folk! I am a middle school teacher, and while we were doing our annual testing this past week, the other teacher had brought in this book for the middle schoolers to read while they were waiting for the other testers to finish. I had seen movies of this film, but never read the book, so I picked it up, and then found I couldn't put it down! It really IS quite a statement about treatment of animals, as well as the true nature of dogs, and their ancestry. Now I want to read more of Jack London's books! Patty |
