I have this little garden, so looking forward to the reward of summer tomatoes. I had ordered "heirloom tomatoe" plants from HSN. Mistake! These plants were weak and didn't produce. Of the 9 or so plants I rec'd, I got a handful of the "black" tomatoes, and some yellow cherry tomatoes which lacked any flavor. My garden partner/yard man planted some hardy varieties, but only one produced, and the things still haven't ripened! Every three days or so, I go out and pick a half-ripened tomato from his one surviving plant, just so eager for a garden tomato!
Patty
P.S.....Don't ever order the heirloom tomatoe plants from HSN!

Hmmm, what do you suppose the problem is? (beyond the seed variety) I grew heirloom varieties and did great! truly, there is nothing like a vine ripened tomato on a BLT/burger or in a salad!

Here in southern ohio is the same problem.

Ours were awful. The elderly neighbor lady next door has had a garden for 50 years and doesn't recall her tomatoes ever doing so badly. She told me that it's the talk of her friends too...no one's did well!

Wonder what's up with that?

I am in WV, not so far from you, Kimmy. I think it was a fluke of the season, as I've heard this from others here as well. I think my neighbor's tomatoes did pretty well, as well as a friend who bright me some tasty ones, so maybe it was just my garden. I don't know, but I sure missed them this summer. Still waiting for those green ones to ripen!

Tomatoes here did awful too. Planted various tomatoes from seed and so far only gotten a few handfuls of cherry tomatoes and nothing of the large *have no idea what kind they are* tomatoes. We even bought six of those *tree tomatoes*that are advertised to yield bushels of tomatoes and so far only three tomatoes have grown and they are still green.

I did get 8 spaghetti squash and one yellow squash. Few cucumbers. No hot peppers or green peppers. shrugs shoulders. Last year I had "tons" of tomatoes, cucumbers, yellow squash and hot peppers. Might have to "perk" up this soil for next year.

Yes, RF! I just got a couple of squash, no peppers, etc. Very strange indeed. I hppe this is not due to some apocalytic weather phenomenon!

My tomatoes also sucked this year - I think I got a grand total of 6 of which 5 are still green. I've heard from everyone I've talked to up here that their tomatoes are all still green too. I don't think we've had enough consistently dry hot sunny weather for them.

In contrast my chili plants are bearing a bumper crop and most of my herbs are doing really well and this is my best year ever for flowers.

So on balance I'm happy - just bummed about the tomatoes.

I may try and transplant one of my chili plants and bring it inside over the winter - I had one once that got to be seven years old before it finally died.

Yea but first you really should wash 'em!

Mine were horrible this year.. as a matter of fact, my plum tomatoes were puny. I only got a few yellow squash and the zucchini didn't produce at all! Last year I had so many zucchini that I gave away baskets full. I finally started to get some decent peppers.. AMEN. The prices are outrageous for green peppers in the supermarket and I go through a lot of them. The green beans weren't as good as they usually are either.

I think we got more rain than usual and the only thing that really fared well (as usual) are the sunflowers!

I didn't water mine enough but they tasted okay, the two plants just died early. I have a a "volunteer" plant from last year that is looking good; it showed up in my weed pile so is surrounded by cool, damper, dead vegetation up to its knees :-)

I had a cantaloupe plant and it only produced one cantaloupe and that was exciting but then extremely disappointing as it was tasteless. My dirt is just topsoil though; I had the landscaper make the little raised garden for me last year when they were doing all the other stuff and they just used "dirt" instead of mixing it and making it nice for a garden. Now it's hard as rock and I'm going to take everything out in a month or so and redig it and integrate some good soil, etc.

Well, our tomatoes are too prolific but peppers and cukes were poor. We had rain for three months so I think that is the cause.

Very bad... last year I had a problem with my broccoli, but everything else grew like wildfire. I had eggplant galore, corn, habaneros - red & green peppers, green beans, cucumbers, zucchini, squash, tomatoes, cantaloupe (which was tasteless). I had a basil bush (this year none), peppermint, parsley, oregano. I think we didn't have enough rain early on in the season, and way too much in the last month in this part of SC.

This summer we had so much rain!! Most of my garden got washed out!!
We had wicked thunder storms like every 2days/ever other day. The
lightening and thunder was like worst I have seen in years!

Finally this month we have had enjoyable sunny days with little to no rain
so far (keeping my fingers crossed).

Had lots of tomatoes but my peppers did lousy, very few summer squash.

We planted 17 tomato plants where I work and they are still producing!!!
I can't believe it.
The residents have tomato sandwiches, tomato slices with their meals, and I've cooked fried green tomatoes every week for them. This is the first year that they have produced like this.
