Hey Bowzz, I know a few things about rats and could probably find you some links/websites... I'll try to do that this weekend and PM you, ok?

Basically, you want to make sure you're going to be getting all the proper licenses and follow procedures et al.

Thanks Christina! Yeah, its not an immediate need. I can wait for sure. It's something I wouldn't be doing until I got a bigger place anyways. I just LOVE rats to bits, I would breed them for pets and NOT for food... I could never send a ratty baby to be eaten, I would never get over the guilt lol.

Thanks again

i know you must be very careful with equipment/housing etc. my daughter had a mouse that had babies. a couple disappeared/escaped and we never did catch them. they did however continue to breed.

Ive never heard of such a thing. Dont get me wrong, i hope you get what you need and the rats are happy and stuff. Its just that here in Scotland if someone said they had a ratery they would be shunned!!!!!! LOL

hahahahah you guys are cards you are.

And yes, I know rats have a bad rap, but they actually do make good pets for those who enjoy them. They can actually be very social and happy when kept in pairs and can even learn tricks sometimes.

From what I am learning though, its just too big a thing for me to do right now, i need to learn much much more before I undertake this.

I think I might just stick to getting a pair of hooded ratty babies and keep them and see how I do.

I love rats as pets
Too bad my dad heard from some guy at work that his daughter had rats and they were the worst, smelliest, ugliest pets ever and even though his daughter loves them he can't wait for them to die...so now he forbids me to ever have a pet rat so long as I live in the same house as him. I don't think my mom would mind so much, but the poor rat would be on our kitties dinnerplates (or bowls?) by morning I'm afraid.

My daughter just bought a rat for a pet. She's so sweet. We've had rats before and I prefer them to other small animals. They don't just run away to hide, they are easy to care for, and they're very social. But, breeding them??? no idea, no idea what the demand for them is either?
Well, just wanted you to know that I like rats too!

Good luck to you rain! I'd be afraid I was in lost's position or worse, that they'd escape and continue to breed uncontrollably!

Rainzz ,, I know a bit about this ,, if you are going to raise for research >> first ya have to build a block or poured concrete building ..

Ya have to have an autoclave and sterile entryroom and clothing to enter breeding area .

The enviro must be super filtrated and bacterial free to be within guidlines as to institution you will be shipping them too .

The reasearchers expect some viral transmission dureing shipping .. Your obligations are to certify the breeding enviroment . To be germ and bacterial free.

There are Gov. agencies that do periodical inspections and there are test kits and airborne spore trapps that you have to maintain something like every 8 or 12 hours >> I don't recall all that .

My knowledge comes from early days in the early mid 60's . My father was one of the first in midwest U S to raise exclusively for research when cancer reasearch was in it's infancy .

Now if ya want to raise for pet stores ? > Looser restrictions >> but ya not know if they become feeder rats ..

Hope this has helped .

WMD.
