Oh dear.

Trick-or-treat hours in my little burg are 5-7 pm. I've had one little bitty one (like, barely walking age) and a group of early elementary age.

Since it's not wise for me to have sugar-laden things in the house anymore, I decided this year I would hand out Halloween-themed stickers, temporary tattoos, and pencils. To say it's not going well is a gross understatement.

*I* figure, I'm sparing the parents sugar highs and dentist bills, and sparing myself a chocolate binge. And it's not like I'm giving the kids rocks, like poor Charlie Brown gets. But I did wonder, as I was buying this stuff, if they would be disappointed, and so far? That turns out to be a big ol YES.

Oh well. Back to chocolate next year, I guess!

Yep...no candy given on Halloween is like no presents on birthdays! Totally disappointing for sure Gotta give you props for at least trying to give out stuff that won't harm the general health of the kids....your intent was great!

I did just have one tyke (luckily for her, a very cute one of about 4) who just stopped back for her second go-round at my house, so maybe it's not TOO bad....

It's for my own good as well as theirs, because I shouldn't be scarfing candy, which I will do if I have it in the house. My dad was a fabulous (NOT) role model for this when I was a kid -- after dinner, he would take an entire bag of mini candy bars or something downstairs, plop in his recliner, and eat the entire bag while watching TV. And then I wonder how I ended up this way....?!?! But now, being diabetic, I'm being forced to control it. And it sucks. And I'm weak enough to know I won't behave if I keep sugary stuff around me.

Oh well. I've gotten lots of compliments on my blinking ghost headband, anyway.

Trick Or Treat is similar but a little different where I live Candybear! The hours are the same 5:00pm - 7:00pm, which is really good the Trick or treaters are home & ready for bed by 8:00pm. My guests today were ~78 yrs. old to 92 yrs. old (& he led the group!) they were barely of walking age too, They were all dressed up.
As Flappers & Gangsters!!! LOL
They don't digest chocolate or candy to well though. I think they would flip over the tattoos & pencils idea!! Thanks Candybear good idea for next year!

i'm really sorry for the halloween bust, but you did try! sometimes you've got to just let the chips fall because you HAVE to care for your diabetes that is so important if you are to "get to 92 and go trick or treating" and i'd like you to get there.

i feel really bad because i have all my lights off and am hiding inside on my computer. no one can be home with me and i can NOT answer my door alone on this night. it is too scary for me because i went through satanic ritual abuse in childhood and this time of year has horrid associations for me. i HATE disappoint little children and hate to get triggered by my past.

you tried. give yourself credit for that!!!

There is no way to be popular where I live...the little ones would be terrified just to get to my home..I am so remote and without light...

So today I dressed as a clown and went to the Children's wing of Trident and juggled and did some majic tricks...The big hit( as usual) was my Golden Dusty who is hospital certified...

He doesn't juggle(yet) but his tongue is the best!!!!!

We had more fun than the kids,,if that is possible..

Beggars are choosers now? What a tragedy! Parents are really raising spoiled children I guess.

No trick or treaters here... the town center behind the community is having a bash. But I quit giving out candy eons ago... generally had trinkets and faith-based pamphlets for them. This year, should anyone have decided to walk about instead of going to the free bash, I had bean seeds, dirt and a peat pot in a plastic bag for them... kiddoes like to grow things. If I had bought candy, I would be throwing it away or handing it out to homeless now. That's a waste.
LOL when I first began labeling a few of the bags, I put the name of the seeds on it... Lakeview Beans... BUSH beans (meaning they grow in / on a bush) rofl I decided that probably wasn't a good thing to tell them.

Hey! Bush Beans has a great big plant near here and they're really good beans! (It's the commercial with the dog being trusted with the family's secret recipe and telling it every chance he gets.)

But I do know what you meant, and in that context, I wouldn't have mentioned it either.

Lenny, that sounds like so much fun!! I bet the kids loved it.

Pixies, I'm so sorry for what you've been through. I certainly understand why this time of year would be awful for you!

aw. i don't know about pencils, but temporary tattoos seem like an ok idea. they get enough candy everywhere else, and you're in a pretty legitimate position for not having it in your own house.

i was all excited because it's our first halloween in a sort of normal neighborhood, so we bought all this candy, and not one kid showed up. not even the kids that live right next door.

also, it's candy i don't much like. so i'm not even glad to have it left over.

Oh no!! There's nothing worse than a ton of leftovers you don't want to eat yourself. Can you take it to work, or dump it on a friend?

I lived in apartments prior to moving here, so never got any kids either. Now I rent half a duplex on the edge of what passes for downtown in a small town, so they're everywhere. That's only fun on Halloween, and much less so when I'm dodging them on their skateboards and whatnot.

Yes, I've only broken 3 teeth on jaw breakers in the last week or two! Yesterday I bought little trick-or-treat bags and am taking my "leftovers" to the Dentist on Tuesday as a "Trick" :-)

We had about 30 kids. I deliberately bought candy I didn't like and only ate about half of it.

(((((((((( candybear )))))))))))) I like the idea of giving out treats other than candy, I saw several people giving out party favors instead of candy and my kids were more excited about the little toys.

Maybe that's the ticket -- next year I'll try dollar-store toys. I did have these extremely cool plastic straws, with pumpkins or ghosts on them (your choice ), that seemed to be the least hated of what I had to offer -- I have 3 of them left and I'm keeping them! LOL *I* think they're cool, anyway!

I would have loved temporary tattoos and stickers for Halloween when I was a kid. But I guess times have changed, lol.

What an awesome idea! I'm so stealing that for next year!
