So, I'm picking up and moving again -- to Minnesota, which is treasonous for a Wisconsinite -- but since I'm fond of both regular paychecks and health insurance, I said yes.

Better yet, the job was literally handed to me: The editor of this paper is someone I competed against for over a year here. He said he knew what I could do, needed a strong reporter, and it was mine if I wanted it.

It's in Fergus Falls, MN, which is closer to Fargo (insert bad-accent jokes here ) than anything else, and about 2.5 hours northwest of the Twin Cities. I poked around online and discovered that it was pretty much identical to where I live now, which, after all my complaining, I've actually sort of come to ... well, adjust to, anyway. (I'm not willing to admit to liking it. )

No good breweries or cheese in MN, sadly, but hey: Life should be an adventure, right?

candybear,
I have no idea what the move to Minnesota involves... hell I dont even know where it is on the map, I'm from the UK.

What I do know is I am really pleased for you and I wish you all the very best for the future.

If you want good beer come over to the UK and I'll show you a few nice watering holes I'll even show you Cheddar where the best cheese comes from.

Stay Safe

Congrats on the job. You could always buy the beer and cheese online and have it shipped.

Way to go Candybear!

I know right where you will be moving. I grew up in Grand Forks, ND, and my family drove to Maple Lake, near Fergus Falls, MN for summer week-ends. I'm so glad to see you have employment! Yea Yea Yea. I also so lived in WI.

Bye bye to "Go Packers, Bratworst and Cheese Curds"!

Fargo and the accent! You bet'cha. Well, most of that movie took place in the twin cities, not Fargo. More in MN have the accent so many ppl think of when they recall the movie Fargo. I really hear the accent when I talk to my brother who still lives in Grand Forks. I even thought I'd lost mine...last year I had a co-worker ask where I was from because I had this "accent".

Other than lakes and a lot of Scandaniavans (???my spelling is the pits), I can't think of a thing to tell you about. Lots of Larsons and Andersons and church pot luck dinners! And German Luthers vs Norweigian Luthers! Be sure to try "Lefsa" I know my spelling is not correct, but that's how it is pronounced. I miss lefsa. Freshing made, with butter! umm ummmmmmm.

Good luck, keep us posted .

hehe Pex, where I live now is only about an hour from the Cities, and there are boatloads of Scandinavians here as well. I'm a big fan of lefse with lingonberry sauce as a result. Oh, and Swedish meatballs.

Thanks everybody for the good wishes. (And Inky -- you had the gift of being a Cheesehead and you gave it up to be a FIB?!?!?! Shame on you! )

Congrats Candy! Sorry to see you. But at least you'll feel at home with the weather there. You'll get these lovely ice storms first!

OMG, we are being BURIED in snow right now. Started around 2 pm and is coming down like gangbusters. Gotta be 6 inches on the ground already. But I don't care, because I had absolutely no reason to leave the house today! LOL Those days are coming to an end....when I was in the process of moving here, and going over the paperwork with HR, I was told that snow was not an excuse for not coming to work -- because "we expect people who choose to live here to know how to deal with it."

Northern MN isn't much better. I remember fighting icy roads already in September there. (More ice in my experience less snow.) But still so happy for you! Son's hoping for a snow day tomorrow and will probably get it.

Candybear,

Where are you in WI? We lived in Kenosha for 5-6 years! The week-end after the moving company dropped off our stuff we got 10" of snow. My hubby and I looked at each other and asked at the same time, "What have we gotten ourselves into?"

However, before all that we lived in the UP in MI and had 3 years of record snowfalls, 225", 250" and the last year nearly 300". I never want to live with that much snow ever again. Or cold! Having lived in northern climates most of my life, I know how to get around when I need to in the snow. It's the other people who freck out with 2" here in Southern Ohio that worry me

Oh, it's nice to hear someone else knows of the delious taste of lefsa. My mom used to make it, though there isn't a Scandanavian gene in our family.

Enjoy your new place. Flat land and all

Pex

Pex, right now I live in Chippewa Falls (near Eau Claire, northwest part of the state). But I lived in various parts of Milwaukee for 10 years or so before moving here in 2006.

Lutefisk is Norwegian, I think, and disgusting no matter who makes it.

As for the job, etc --- it isn't going to happen. Which I actually am fine with. The guy I knew who was editor of this paper, who called out of the blue and said "yours if you want it," called me back 2 hours later and said "um, uh, yeeeah, my boss says I can't just hire someone over the phone." So I drove up there last week and met his boss. To say that we hated each other is a gigantic understatement. When he said he expected 15 stories a week (!!!!) and "don't spend 5 hours on something that could be done in 3 paragraphs," well, combined with my totally hating the town and realizing that I am totally over reporting -- I'm still looking.

Plan B was to move in with my sis and BIL, save some money and get back to Milw., except BIL had a heart attack Friday and I now have no idea where that stands. He's fine, it was "minor" (if that's possible with a heart attack) and came home today, but we've been through all kinds of other crap with him, including cancer, and he's only 55. I'm rather attached to him, so I'm kind of freaked out.

Meanwhile, I have 4 weeks of unemployment left....

Blah, blah, and blah some more.

C.

Thanks, Be. The state is supposed to be telling me if I qualify for an extension, but they're so far behind, who knows. I do know they already screwed over the single, childless adults on health insurance -- it was supposed to be open to us April 1 and now won't be till July 1. The fed stimulus is supposed to qualify me for COBRA, but even with the govt. paying 65% it would still cost me over $200 a month. Which is cheap, unless you have no money.... I know there are tons and tons of people in the same boat -- I wish we'd all get out of it in a hurry!
