Hello I have been having this hair problem for only the past few months and was wondering what knowledge others have of this as well? What they've done or if you may be a hair stylist, or Chemist for that matter.

I hope to not confuse you too much, if so just ask, and I will do my best answering.

In early December of 2008, I went to have my hair corrected to remove the darker yellowiness, I am trying to get it Platinum. It was lightened quite a bit, and I was than told that to keep brassiness and yellow tones out of it, I should use this "toning shampoo and conditioner" (purple shampoo) I was also told that it would only take 2-3 more applications of bleaching to get it to my desired color.

When I came back in two months later for root-touch up and another full head application. I am told from using this toner shampoo, the ends of my hair kind of went grayish, and I got a few pin stripes of bluey/purplish color from the shampoo, (which I noticed) BUT I also noticed that it did neutralize the yellow quite a bit. I hadn't been told not to use it every shampoo which I had been. They than told me I was not supposed to do that, hence the gray, purple, blue colors in the hair. I am to use it every 2nd or third wash.

They bleached the roots and toned it (this is a college with instructors) so I have not blamed the students at all. I am already aware that the instructors just may not know what they are doing. (there have been other complications as well) Because I have had a negotiating problem, which I worked out with the admin after they dyed my hair the second time, a baby duck yellow, and said to get it to my desired color I would than have to use the toning shampoo.

I also understand with the amount of chemicals already in my hair, even if they were to do the same process as the first time, it may not work out. I came back in a few days later for a correction of that. It was much better, practically the same color it ended up as the first time I had come in for last December.
Anyhow

They than start passing around the word "toner" separate from the toning shampoo ( it is a part of the process, bleach than tone) and what I've come to realize is that this toner is a Dye, which puts color into the hair. And as we know Bleach takes color out. I am also aware of the fact that over bleaching causes the hair to basically fall out/break off/ect.. BUT why do they use toner???? when I want Platinum, where there is no yellow at all????

****ALSO TAKE NOTE THAT I HAD THE WRONG DESCRIPTION AT FIRST, I WAS CALLING IT ***A WHITE WHITE PLATINUM BLONDE**** The thing that is I guess difficult or confusing is that I don't want Blonde, I want Platinum, and that Platinum is a type of Blonde. haha Geez. Not wanting to make this more complicated. UGH.

Now I have been told that it will take much longer than those 2-3 more applications to get my desired color. That's fine.

BUT my other misunderstanding is even after all this time (however long it may be to get to my desired color) which is blamed on how dark my hair is and this purple toning shampoo and the chemicals in my hair. When I go in for ROOT TOUCH UPS, my roots will be dark again, and what are they not going to be lightened to the same color as the rest of my than Platinum hair???? Is this just because they don't want to damage the whole head of hair? But they are able to get the roots from than on after to match it?

Plus I have had my bangs and underneath section of my hair platinum b4 while the rest of my hair was my own hair color. (this was a year ago) That person than did it again to my whole head, and had problems. I hadn't done anything else to it, it was growing out) And that person did it in one application. In a professional setting. Bloody Expensive. So if they dyed it/bleached it (whatever) maybe they just do not have the right color at this college??? To do it the first time.

Plus these instructors keep telling me that this toning purple shampoo is what makes it this platinum and that u can't just have platinum??? As soon as I alternate with a normal shampoo, it just goes right back to this aweful yellow. And it only really starts to neutralize the yello after a few washes of toning shampoo. AHHHHH So now I just have gone back to shampooing with the purple toning shampoo every time. I am still very worried that it looks blue/purple/gray. It's dull looking. HELP! Waaaa Can I cry now??

Also a student there said to try Clairol Shimmer Lights Shampoo and Conditoner, I've been using Joico. The Clairol really turns my hair just a light blue. HAHAHA It is sooo frustrating.

I have decided that when I go back in for the next root touch up, that that is all I will do, because I think my hair needs a break<<<I made a funny, since that is what it's been doing, Breaking.

So now that I've made it allllll confusing if there is anyone out there that knows anything lemme know. Thanks. Most Appreciated.

P.S. I find that I finding humor in it helps me cope, as I have already cried a few times over it, I am NOT ready to give up, that is not an option to let it grow out (AWEFUL) or redye it my own color. Nope Nope Nope

I used to be a beautician so the info I have may be a bit old, but... I have almost black hair with lots of red in it. When I was working, I did manage to get a spot that was platinum.

Ok, first, your roots, if not let go for too long, will bleach out all the way because of the warmth of your head.

Second, if I was you, I'd be globbing in the Mayo, yes, mayonaise, on my hair, wrapping it in a plastic bag, and either sitting out in the sun to warm it or applying very gentle heat with your blow dryer. Leave the mayo on for about half an hour and then wash it. After a couple of treatments or so, depending on the dryness of your hair, the luster should return.

What I did when I had the one platinum spot on my head, as well as now that I have grey hair is use Roux Platinum (which is really a light grey) or White. There is also Silver Lining. It's a rinse that washes out with the next shampoo so you'll have to apply it every time you wash your hair. Also, take care that you get it on evenly. Comb through, with a wide tooth comb, to make sure it goes on even.

The blue and purple streaks are no doubt where your hair is more porous. Go to the beauty supply and buy "Protein". It's in a clear, liquid form. Apply it all over your hair, comb it through with a wide tooth comb and make sure your entire head is saturated. Leave it in and style your hair. You can add any other product after you have applied the "Protein."

Something else you could get is a filler to fill the more porous hair. I believe you saturate your hair with it, leave it in for a while and then rinse it out. It's colorless. It can also be applied in the toner. Yes, you need toner. I seriously doubt that you can get your hair completely white with just bleach. The toner is what tones out the yellow. It, too, has peroxide as in the bleach.

What color is your hair naturaly, BTW? How many times has your hair been bleached completely? Be very careful with that, ok? It's already breaking, isn't it? The "Protein" will do wonders for the breaking as will the mayo. Mayo has oils and protein in it. No need for fancy treatments that don't work, anyway.

Good luck and let us know how everything works out, ok?

Dear Sweet, This sounds a lot more complicated than it had to be. Sounds like this school doesn't know what they are doing, and keep coming up with all kinds of excuses, perhaps they really don't know how to give you what you want.
I have been a hairdresser for 34 years now, and even I am confused. What is your natural color? Have they been using bleach? Now try and explain to me all of the colors in your hair now, and where they are. Also I would start out now doing some heavy condition treatments, and you can also use a leave in one. Let me know and I will try and help you ok?
Thanks for this!

Thank You Sooooo Much SeptemberMom and Nina52, I will have to print this page out.

I just needed someone to be honest with me. To help me understand what I've been misunderstanding

I have heard the instructors pass around a few numbers, my hair color is a 6 or 7. Plus one of them came by and said wow your hair is really dark. It's funny cuz I've noticed that my roots are almost black, just for a few milimeters, and than I am a light brunette, with strands of reds, and dark blonde throughout.

I just did a deep protein conditioning tonight. Creme throughout the hair, with a plastic bag, and than added the hair dryer (15 mins). The last one I did was two weeks ago, and they did one two weeks b4 that. (the college) I have def heard of the mayonaise, I'll give that a go. I have also heard of egg whites and olive oil too.

***Your posts really made my day/night***

Ok, I used to use John Frieda's Sun In four years ago, but they discontinued it. Than I dyed my hair at home a dark chocolate brown almost black. For about two years I tried playfully lightening it. By just doing strands at home with bottle dyes. Last January my hair was my own color, and than I dyed the underneath hair and bangs a blonde haha (coppery orangey yellow) :S, I had it corrected at a Salon last March the stylist hit it dead on as Platinum (I was freakin amazed) just the underneath and bangs. She also used a "clear"? dye for all over to make it shinier she said. Weird cuz it kinda turned my natural color a bit of a red, not a total red, but my brown sort of looked auburn. So in between all these times it was quite long than cut just above my shoulders a couple of times, and now growing out quite long. Last summer as the roots began to grow out I used a sun in spray that made it yucky orange red. DUHHHH

So I went into the same stylist but she was at another salon and didn't have the same products, she also told me that she couldn't get it to that white platinum that I liked. It came out the yellowy and slowy turned a dark yellow, it was quite fried. I never used the purple shampoo than. For about 3-4 months.

Oh another thing the instructors always say not to stick me under the heater when my hair is bleaching because that will burn my scalp? The other professional stylist both times last March and September did stick me under a heater while I had been bleached. The first time I was never fried but did receive a rash of some sort, I guess lil pinkish burns all over my scalp.

So in December they corrected the color. Than I went back Feb 2 (the screw up) and than back on Feb.6 much better. But I've decided not to get my whole head done in the next month because I think my hair needs a break. AND I have limited funds, that Clairol purple shampoo kind of cleaned me out. :S It was $45.oo. I was expecting 25 at the max. BUT anyways.

BUT I am really excited to try out the other suggestions. Especially that filler.

I am not a professional at all but to me it really sounds like you need to give your hair a break. I would hate for you to wake up bald one day hehe.

I have had incredible success with this stuff:
http://www.redken.com/products/haircare/all-soft

Specifically, this one:
http://www.redken.com/products/hairc...ft-heavy-cream

for repair.

I have incredibly dry hair to begin with, as well as thick and wiry, and i too dye alot. I find the all soft just amazing, the heavy cream makes your hair SO SOFT and manageable.. and i dont have manageable hair to begin with. lol.

I've decided, since im a bit of a hippy, to get small sized dreads put in this summer. My hair is almost down to my waist now and its hard to take care of, but even still I dont want to cut it. so im going with dreads. I may dye them funky colors, cause im funky like that

I think at this point if your hair is breaking, you do need to give it a break.. and also make sure to do deep conditioning AT LEAST every single week, if not every 3-4 days. This will keep putting the moisture to it. They mayo thing does help a bit, for me its just not enough though. YOu may want to follow up with something like infusium 23's leave in..

The all soft cost me about 15-20 CAD, so not that expensive. It is at salons only. For the infusium 23, its only about 10.00 so its not that bad either.

Also avoid brushing while wet, or what not, because you will end up with more breakage. If you are still getting alot of breakage, honestly sometimes the best thing you can do is get a trim to take off some of the destroyed ends. I hate doing that myself though, as i loath cutting my hair..lol
Thanks for this!

The last time I tried an at home remedy it seemed to make my hair elasticky and was coming out in lil chunks. I used Avocado and Olive Oil, with the plastic bag and hair dryer. :S

I used Mayonnaise tonight for 2 1/2 hours. I used the plastic bag and massaged it in. I never used the blow dryer, I will next time. I washed it out with water. It was even stickier in the shower (a dry stickiness) I did NOT use shampoo. Just rinsed it throughly. Than conditioned it.

It seems to be quite sticky as of the last 2-3 months in the shower.

The shampoo did lather at first (toning shampoo), but within the last month, no longer lathers. Just sticks. I guess due to the damage already.

I will be getting the roots done in about a month but not the whole head of hair. I will ask about the filler than and other options.

Early Dec I had an inch or so of a trim. Early Feb I had another trim, and about two weeks ago I trimmed off really bad ends. ( I know this is bad, since I do not have salon scissors, and it will cause breakage further up the hair shaft. BUT I had to.

Oh right I also Blow dry and use a straightening iron every couple of days. So my added "normal" damage.

I know it's more trouble than it's worth, but I am very stubborn.

Ok this thread has become like my own little blog entry. I've never had a blog. Hmm

I am now using the hair dryer on my plastic bag covered Mayonnaise hair, and it is dripping alll over.

Another few minutes of this than I am off to the shower.

I noticed shiny-ness from last time, and maybe slightly softer.

WoW this mayonnaise really heats up. Bubbles.
