I think my I have hypo thyriodisim. The reason is because I have never felt like this. Only in the past 5 years. And the past week has been just awful. I found out that one of my cousin's has hypo thyriod. It runs in my family. And i feel like I am losing my mind. i am so scared. I cannot explain the way I feel to no one. But it's feels like my anxiety, ocd and depression has went into over drive. Am I losing my mind? Does hypo thyroid make you lose your mind? I know it causes mental problems but I can barely eat because of the anxiety inside of me. I am very scared right now. I tend to over dramatize things and I don't want this to be one of them. I am going to make an appt. with my family doc. And hopefully he can see me tomarrow. And help me. I am freaking out so bad. I have heard of older women who have lost their minds due to this. And I have two sons and a husband that I love so much and I am scared that my problems will tear us apart because I am so scared and nervous all the time. Whenever I don't let my son's do things they want because they are grounded or I don't have the time, I feel so bad. I can't hardley leave the house these past few weeks. Today I thought was gonna be a half way decent day I felt good and got up early aand went out to probate my mom's will but i had'nt slept very good and I avoid caffinne cause it seems to make my syptoms worse so I am very tired. So mabye thats why I am scared so bad right now but I feel sick to my stomach. Has anyone ever took Synthroid for this? Did it have any adverse side affects like worsening depression and anxiety and ocd? I heard it does some people that way. Zoloft did me that way and now I am scared to take anything what so ever. So I am really apprehensive about Synthyroid. My grandmother and cousin takes it and they swear by it. They say it does'nt have any bad side affects, but the way I think is that it adjusts your hormones and that has to mess with you somehow. I think i am worrying myself litterally sick over all this stuff goin on with me right now. I am scared I hope some one replies to this tonight so I can get a little peace of mind. Sorry I am just rambiling but I don't know what else to do. I don't have anyone to talk to and I am scared.

Have you read up on this, or just listening to family (who might mean well...but sometimes...)
http://www.endocrineweb.com/hypo1.html There's one link for some information. I really haven't heard of anyone losing their mind because of it. And you wouldn't anyway, even if you do have it, because you're aware and so are your family members. (((((hugs))) It's common, and treatable. Wouldn't it be "nice" to find one thing that would take care of all those bad issues with which you are dealing? ![]()

I have Hashimoto's Disease and take synthroid every day. My endocrinologist monitors my blood levels closely and adjusts my medication levels accordingly.
Hypothyroidism can make you very nervous and depressed, but it sounds like you have a lot of anxiety and panic and might, (please notice I said might, not will), need additional meds. I have Panic Disorder, among other things. I take my meds every day and do the best I can. I'm not a danger to myself or others. I'm a nice neighbor and try my best to be a good friend and family member. Having mental illness does not make me less of a person. It's just something I have and I take care of myself, take my meds and go to my Therapist and Psychiatrist. Look at it this way: My brother has diabetes. He takes his insulin. I have mental health issues. I take my psych meds. He's not embarassed because he has to take insulin and I'm not embarrassed because I have to take psych meds. We just have different illnesses. Please understand that if your Dr says you do have a mental illness, that it's ok. It's not something that can't be helped with meds and therapy. Don't be afraid to try medications that can make your life a joy to live. I wish you the very best. Please let us know what you find out and how you're doing. Jan

you need blood work to determine if it is hypo or not. you can't just start taking medication for it. I hope you get some relief.

Yeah I know. I don't even like taking meds for anything. They scare me. I dont know why but they do. But the only thing I have heard to treat hypo thyroid is Synthyroid.

I'm so sorry you are having anxiety with this possible health issue. I do know that anxiety can make us suspect we are not okay mentally... so I do hope you can try some breathing and grounding exercises to relax you... and calm you down. I listen to tapes myself, and if you haven't got any relaxation tapes, you can scout out some on youtube... for the time being. BTW, the thyroid replacement medications won't affect you mentally, but rather, they bring the levels up or down, depending on the type of issue, and that will just create a healthier existence for you ~ if you have it. I know lots of people with thyroid disorders and they live happy and healthy lives ~ so in case that frightens you, know that you will be okay. My Grandmother had a thyroid condition, and she was a happy and delightful person throughout her years. Treating a condition like thyroid will help the symptoms disappear too... so not to worry ~ okay? You will be fine either way ~ try and focus on grounding your anxiety, as I found that this helps me tremendously ~ so that I can deal with things while I'm at my best, and this helps me also feel my strength. Nothing like good old anxiety and panic to zap our strength ~ geesh, I can't count how many times I lost valuable peaceful moments do to my anxiety. I wish the very best for you, Dear Thunderbear, and will be sending positive energy your way ~ hoping you are calm and peaceful and resting so nice ~ and listening to soothing music until you feel better, and calmer about such news. Maybe you will be spared this problem? Maybe not. But no matter what ~ I believe you will get through it, handle it, and feel better in no time flat! I see you happy and healthy, so, get your tests and keep us informed, ok? I'm pulling for you, xoxox Peace and Calmness, Night xoxoxo ![]() |

It sounds like you have frightened yourself with thoughts about the possibility of being hypothyroid after learning that your cousin has been diagnosed and it runs in the family. Please see your doctor for a simple blood test to ease your fears of wondering and what-if thinking.
I have Hashimotot's hypothyroidism. I take a thyroid repleacement medication and my thyroid is checked with the simple blood test periodically. When my thyroid is not working as it should, I feel an extreme fatigue that no amount of rest or caffeine or anything can affect, my skin gets very dry--especially my hands which get dry and rough, digestion slows so constipation can occur, my thinking slows like thinking does when a person is fatigued or doesn't feel well. When the medication dosage is where it should be, I feel great with no symptoms. I hope you will relieve your worries with a visit to your doctor. |

My daughter-in-law has hypothyroidism (so do I) and got it about the time she was pregnant; it's often common with pregnancy and doesn't have to be permanent. I would go to your doctor and get it checked out so you can get it off your list of things to be worried about.
"One in every 20 women will develop hypothyroidism after pregnancy. This happens because they developed antibodies to their own thyroid prior to the pregnancy, and this caused an inflammation of the thyroid after delivery. This condition most often develops between four months to a year after delivery and usually resolves on its own. If it is long lasting or permanent, it is easily treated with medication." Please go in and have a simple blood test done to determine if you do indeed suffer from this disorder... I say this because I just had one done to test my thyroid and it cam back normal (1.7) - even my doctor was shocked as he was ready to place me on medicine once the blood test results came back... guess this girls old body fooled them but again.
