My boyfriend went to the doc last week because he felt light headed while working out and has been working out 5 days a week without losing any weight and has become really thirsty and urinating much more than normal. So he went and had a fasting blood test and they told him if everything came back normal they would call and cancel his appt. Well then they called and told him to come in so we know something is wrong. Just looking for some good thoughts until he goes to the doc on Monday....

Good thoughts for you both.

He may be diabetic. If he is, its alright (I mean, its not fun or anything). But there are very effective treatments for diabetes now. Don't be worried. No matter what, I bet everything will be fine. Anyhow, if you have questions please ask. My husband is diabetic, so I may be able to at least ease your fears a bit.

Don't jump to conclusions! Generally, if you want to become thinner you do aerobic exercises, not just lift weights. Thirst can also be a sign of eating the wrong foods, especially too many salty ones. If he's thirsty from eating salty foods and quenches this thirst with beverages that include caffeine then he will be urinating a lot. And, if those drinks are sweetened with sugar or corn syrup, or contain alcohol, then they are full of calories and will cause him to gain weight. His MD might recommend a visit to a dietitian or a nutritionist. I hope all is well.

Yeah, he makes it a point to not eat a lot of salty foods and besides his 1 cup of coffee in the morning all he drinks is water. If he gets tea it's unsweetened. And he will have a gatorade every now and then. His breakfast is either granola or oatmeal. Lunch is usually a turkey sandwich and then we started cooking gluten free meals for him for dinner. So he actually eats super healthy. And he does lift but he runs about 4 miles everyday before he lifts and he doesn't do super heavy weights, he does light weights at fast reps so it's not like body builder type lifting.

He asked about diabetes because that was the first thing that popped into my head. His doc said he prob isn't diabetic because he is gaining weight, not losing it. So that points more to problems with his thyroid. And he does have some other symptoms of hypothyroidism.

His dad found out he has hypothyroidism.....once he reached 350 lbs. I just told him its better to find out now when he is only a little overweight rather than get to his dad's position where he can't even walk down the street anymore. I know I shouldn't worry but I can't help it. Thanks for your support, guys.

hey saluki-kabooki

i am not sure why the doc would say that about diabetes because it can swing both ways... diabetes can affect either type of insulin production and so the weight can go up or down depending on the type affected. The thyroid is a possibility but thirst isn't usually a symptom of that specifically... however thyroid hormones can affect the body in such a way that produces diabetes-like symptoms that are temporary.

i have to regulate my thyroid because i have only a tiny, tiny piece left after a tumor claimed it. All the body's hormones work together and one being off will affect the others - regardless of what some amazingly high number of ignorant doctors seem to think If the tiny piece i have decides to join the game and produce any then it throws off everything else and guess what happens? yep, i start getting small amounts of ketones in my urine and i get really thirsty, etc etc etc

both thyroid disease and diabetes are genetically predisposed but both are manageable with treatment. i know you are good at your own research/reading, so read read read whichever problem it is. My personal experience is that anything hormone related is subtle and variable and it can be difficult to get doctors to pay attention to those sorts of changes. i've run into the attitude that since we can throw synthroid at it where is the problem? It's more complicated than that but it still is manageable.

people may recommend various sources of dietary iodine... stay away from them! Those are good before a problem develops but taking such supplements along with a thyroid condition can cause problems.

things will work out saluki... the thyroid can sure throw a monkey wrench in things but it's not dangerous if treated. Even with the tumor i had, only one type out of the four is dangerous and those are all very rare.

oh... and one other thing about the weight. i ended up gaining over 100lbs because of the thyroid thing. Low fat programs didn't help one bit. i needed to focus on low carbohydrate eating. With low thyroid the body will lower his metabolism rather than give up it's stored fat - nice, eh? Regulating the hormone is key but then lower carbohydrate was what helped me get the weight off. i'm still a few pounds above where i should be, but i've gotten most of the weight off again.

don't despair even if it gets rocky

Well they pushed back the appt so he just went yesterday and everything is completely normal. But he gained another 4 lbs! His thyroid is normal. Glucose is normal. The only thing was his cholesterol was a little high (by a little I mean only by about 10 pts).

His doc said he has absolutely no idea why he's gaining weight and he is starting to get extremely frustrated.

Does prozac cause weight gain? (I haven't taken that AD yet.) You know how psychotropics wreak havoc on weight...

I asked and he said that his pdoc told him it's actually known for weight loss and loss in appetite. Which his appetite has gone down a lot but he still doesn't lose weight

hi, salukigirl,

thanks for your posts. I am relieved to hear that the MD did not find the problem to be diabetes or hypothyroidism. I know it's very difficult not knowing the cause of the weight gain and other symptoms. could it be that your bf is thirsty from running 4 miles everyday? certainly he must perspire a lot - fluids that must be replenished. if he was not very fit beforehand and is replacing flab with muscle, well, muscle is the heavier of the two which equals weight gain. just a thought. i hope that all is well. please keep us posted.

Thanks guys. We think its probably just stress because now I'm gaining weight too. He is finishing his thesis, looking for a job, we're both moving in about 6 weeks etc.... so that's the only thing that seems to make sense?
