Hi everyone,

A few days ago I started getting pain whenever I swallowed, on the left side of my throat. I was worried about strep throat, but didn't display any other symptoms, but just starting yesterday I got a very uncomfortable symptom:

It's hard to describe. Whenever I take a breath that's even a bit deep, I get a somewhat painful, very uncomfortable sensation right at the bottom of my throat (if I had to point to it, it would be at the bottom of the neck, right at the collarbone. It's not a surface sensation, it's occuring inside the throat). Whenever I get this sensation, I sometimes get an urge to cough, but EVERY time I feel quite nauseous! This very troubling to me, since vomiting is one of my biggest fears.

I still also have the pain on the left side of my throat whenever I swallow. Has anyone experienced this? Should I be worried? Any replies would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Hi I do have this problem but I also have difficulty swallowing food it has to be blended, even then I cough quite a lot to clear my throat.
I had thyroid surgery back in 96 and I've always had to swallow like 3 times per 1 mouth full of water,I thought it was just scar tissue but now everything gets stuck in the centre of my collar bone just beside my breast bone.
Have you ever had thyroid trouble? Or surgery on or around the throat or neck?
I have had an endoscopy and barium meal where I had to drink a chalky substance, the dr asked why I was gagging when I was swallowing the liquid but I informed her its the way I always swallow and I was not gagging or wretching. However I also have fibromyalgia and ME which affects the muscles so this could also be a reason for my swallowing and breathing difficulties.
But I must add previous to surgery and my long term conditions anxiety played a massive role in my breathing and I often felt as if my throat was closing up especially during anxiety attacks.
I would suggest a check up at the drs for a look at your thyroid and glands before worrying to much,I know its easier said than done.
Other things to consider of course is are you on any medication new or old that has these symptoms as a side effect?
Please let me know how you get on but try not to worry and get yourself for that check up
Take care
JK

I'm having all kinds of tests in preparation for thyroid surgery. Last week I saw an Ear, Nose & Throat specialist for symptoms somewhat like you described and he suggested it might be acid reflux. It could be - I've been so stressed out worrying about the surgery, I can see where it's a possibility. The pain kinda' stretches toward my right lung and hurts when I take a deep breath.

If your symptoms don't resolve themselves before too long, I'd recommend checking with your doctor.

For acid reflux, my doctor recommended Prilosex OTC - it was app. $18 at WalMart.

I am not am MD but some of the symptoms sound like acid reflux. I suggest you see a doctor. If it is acid reflux, you will need to modify your diet including beverages. You will have to eliminate acidic and fatty foods and beverages including things like coffee and soda and wine; chocolate, fried foods like french fries and fried chicken, anything with tomato sauce, and the like. Also, you have to be careful not to overeat as that will also cause acid reflux to flare up. If you are overweight, losing weight will help a lot. Please see an MD.

Thank you everyone for replying.

To answer a couple of your questions, no, I don't have thyroid trouble. I have had 9 psych admissions, and each time they did tests to see if there were thyroid issues (standard test for everyone) and my tests always came back fine.

As for acid reflux, I'm not sure if that makes sense for me. I only drink water, nothing acidic like soda (not even coffee, no alcohol). Also, I have a clean and healthy diet, no junk food. I'm actually slightly underweight, so I don't think acid reflux makes much sense for me!

Today the left side of my throat still hurts quite a bit, but the uncomfortable feeling when inhaling has gotten significantly better. I'm hoping this will just be a temporary issue.

Hi Melissa I know it's been a while but I just wanted you to know what my final diagnosis was with the trouble with my throat.
I have dysmobility in the upper and lower osephogus and I've had to totally change my eating habits with the help of a dietitian to a 'soft diet' with no dairy products either.
I feel so much better for knowing this and actually been able to eat again without the fear of choking.
How are things with you? Is the throat issues any better?
I hope your well,take care
