Hi all,
I just remembered today that as a young kid, I would often experience my knees "locking". Let me try to explain. I would be going about my games or whatever, and suddenly when I bent my leg, it would just lock. I would have to get someone (usually my dad, or if at school, a teacher) to be with me and gently pry my leg apart. I never had it happen to both legs at once. I remember it being quite painful as well. I assumed I would have it for the rest of my life, but it stopped well before I reached 13. I wonder if it's related to the process of growing? Anyway, I was just wondering if anybody else has experienced this! |

I experienced knee locking as well as a child, but mine would lock with my legs straight, and like you, would need adult assistance to get up and going again. It too seemed to stop happening about a similar age to you. My left knee has never been quite right though, but my right knee has never had an issue since. I was told by a paediatrition that there was cartlidge in my knees that was under-developed and couldn't cope with the stress of activity (I was very active child in sports etc), and that I would 'grow out of it' when the cartlidge 'caught up'. I did grow out of it so always thought the dx must have been correct. Thanks for mentioning this. It was very painful for me as a child, and debilitating as it would strike at random, and I didn't know anyone else who experienced this till now.

Might have been something like osteochondritis dissecans; in young children it can heal on its own:
