8 weeks ago I had reconstructive ankle surgery and I was prescribed norco for pain. The first 3 days I took it as prescribed, than only as needed. I have days with no pain at all and others are bad. I have not taking the medication regularly and I rotated with dilaudid in the first 4 weeks. Now I take mainly naproxen and rarely norco.
I can see changes in my mental state since the surgery and I wonder how to know if my body developed a dependency to norco or not.
I take Cymbalta for depression and have been stable for 3 years. Shortly after the surgery I seemed to get really depressed and anxious.
Sometimes I get severe ankle pain and I take my norco as prescribed, it seems to calm me somehow, which worries me! I'm in the medical field and I really watched out not to get depended on that drug, but the worsening of my depression and anxiety and the calming effect of the norco worries me. I do not feel the urge to take the medicine for that.
Currently I am also taking antibiotics due to a possible infection of the surgery site.
Does anyone have any experience or infos about this?
Sorry that it is so confusing, I hope you still understand what I mean.
Also a major side effect of the norco is that I'm wide awake and get hot (sweaty) easily!

I did. The sad part is the doctor doesn't really seem to care. Unfortunately I'm having insurance through military, so no way of changing doctors in that specific case!

Well, the other health professions person I'd ask is your pharmacist.
Ask if there are any interactions between the meds & any questions about each individual med. Also dilaudid is a very strong pain killer.

I had reconstructive shoulder surgery with 6months of making trips to physical therapy center. My ortho surgeon only gave vicoden (sp?) for maybe the first month & some for as needed use after that. But absolutely understand the calming effects you describe after taking these pain pills AND I liked them. They never made me wide awake or sweaty though.

You say you were careful not to get dependent on norco. So you worry about wanting to take it for depression & anxiety, because it calms you? If you crave the feeling/effects of norco then that is a concern to ask doc. As for the changes in your mental state, well again ask your doc about anesthesia after effects, describe to him/her what they are, if they're anything to worry about? It may just be a matter of time.

Don't know if this helped you or confused you...
Take care.

The interesting thing is, I bought different shoes and my ankles do not hurt anymore every night. So I have no need to take the med for pain, so I guess I won't need it at all and hope that my other medication starts working like it was supposed to again

Since you only take the drug as prescribed, and don't "feel the urge" to take it for depression or anxiety your risk seems low. There is no craving typical of addiction. From a recovering alcoholic 9 years sober.
