I've posted before about my abscessed tooth. It's been going on for over two weeks now. I went back to the dentist again today. He was as frustrated as me about it still being infected. He gave me two options - go to an oral surgeon and have a root canal and possible surgery to get rid of the infection or pull the danged thing and give me a bridge. I went with the pulling/bridge option because my stinkin' insurance wouldn't cover the surgeon. Seemed pretty straightforeward pull the tooth and put in a bridge when the swelling goes down.

He had to take an ex-ray before they pulled the tooth. The x-ray showed the tooth next to the abscessed one is now infected too! If it's not one thing it's another!

Man I am so tired of this! I feel worn out by the whole mess, not to mention I tired of the danged thing hurting. Enough already!

So sorry, Liz. If it ain't one dang-blasted thing in the world it's another. From my experience, it's like I get a couple of days rest from problems, and then another crops up. I'm just trying to be thankful for those few problem-free days every so often. Hope you'll have a bunch of them soon!
Thanks for this!

Make sure you get this infection under control. My exH had an infection of gum/tooth and got mitral valve infected and had to have the valve replaced.

So, so sorry to hear you are still having to deal with this. It is good to get it taken care of as soon as you can, in addition to the relief but to prevent complications. Hang in there, hoping you will be on the mend soon.

Thanks everyone. I'm calling the surgeon's office Monday to schedule the rootcanal. I've read about the complications that can happen if the infection spreads. I'm hoping I'm safe from that because of the antibiotics I'm on.

Thanks for all your support!

((lizardlady)) - so sorry this infection is still going on. I agree with Yoda - this can cause complications elsewhere in the body. Make sure if its not gone after you finish the meds....you may need another prescription. Are you gargling several times a day. I also advise taking Oregano Oil drops - this fights infections and virus's. I pray this all goes away soon.

AAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

When I saw the dentist Friday I told him a tooth in my upper jaw felt the same as the abscessed on in lower jaw. He told me he wanted to take care of the abscess before we move onto other problems (my mouth is a mess!). This morning I saw there's an abscess trying to break through on the upper jaw. Guess I'll be cvalling his office Monday to set an appointment to deal with it too! This is getting so "dang" old!

You poor thing I hope your dentist can fix things up soon. and just in case this might help, I had achy gums once around the back teeth and I found out it was because my toothbrush could not clean that tight area properly. So my dentist introduced me to an end-tuft toothbrush. It has a small head, only about a quarter of an inch, and tapering bristles and it is useful for cleaning in the tight spaces and crevices of one's mouth and teeth. Maybe that might help prevent any more abscesses? You can probably find it in any drugstore. Meantime, I hope you will feel better real soon!

Thanks Terry. This isn't a toothbrush issue. All of the abscesses are on front teeth. I can actually see the pustule of the abscess on the newest one.

oh it was just a suggestion in case it might help prevent new abscesses/problems. I use the end-tuft on all my teeth, after my regular brushing. Anyways, I hope you can get a dental appointment real soon! All the best

Oh, my. I've had an abscessed tooth and it was one of the worst pains ever. I can't imagine having to deal with more than one abscessed tooth at once. The infections can be so hard to get under control!

I hope you are able to get all of it taken care of soon. Rest and take good care of yourself, your body is fighting hard!

I am thinking they should do a culture and sensitivity rather than just using random antibiotics for hit or miss.

Yoda, that's a good idea! I see him tomorrow about the one up top. I'll suggest it.

and the saga continues....

There was the abscess under the tooth we pulled last week. Then he found the one next to it. I found the one up top last weekend. I suspect the one on the other side of the one we pulled is also infected. It feels like the others.

I see my primary dentist about the one up top tomorrow. I will tell him I'm having trouble with the one on the other side of the one we pulled too. Yoda's idea of culturing the infection sounds brilliant. It seesm weird to me that i have FOUR of the blasted things going on at once. I am also going to tell him tomorrow that I want full x-rays of that side of my mouth rather than one tooth at a time. Let's find the base cause of all of this an END IT! I am so sick and tired of hurting. And I'm REALLY sick of eating mshy foods.

Good idea to push the xrays. This sounds like a bigger issue than they are treating. It must be miserable.

If you are going to get the xrays, besides the regular lead apron, you might consider asking the dentist if he can protect your neck area or surrounding area as much as possible. I also hope he can figure out what is causing all these abscesses.

I saw my primary dentist Friday. He took a full set of x-rays. The tooth in my upper jaw does have an abscess. He said he didn't see any other abscesses, but wrote a referral to the oral surgeon for a root canal of both the top and bottom abscesses. He also wants the surgeon to check out the other tooth that hurts as if it's abscessed. He put me back on antibiotics.

I asked him about having so many abscesses at once. He said that sometimes they come in clusters like this.

I have an appointment with the oral surgeon this Wednesday to get a root canal on the tooth on the bottom. I am going to call the office Monday to see if they can do the other one at the same time. Not crazy about having two root canals at the same time, but I want this to be over.

Gotta say abscessed teeth is an effective way of losing weight! I am limited to mushy food and don't have a lot of appetite. I've dropped 5 pounds in the last couple of weeks.

I feel so sorry for you ((lizardlady)) and can't believe you're still getting more abscesses. Do all the doctors you've seen agree that antibiotic is the most effective one? Are you still on the same kind of antibiotic? I hope you feel better soon.

At this point it's become the ongoing saga of the teeth.

Went to the oral surgeon today. He found another abscess bringing the total to four. One was taken care of a couple weeks ago by pulling th tooth and zapping the infection with a lasar.

He gave me the option of stretching out the three root canals he needed to do or go for one marathon session today. I opted for the marathon. I want this over with. I was in the chair so long the anethesia started to wear off. At least the root canals are done now. I go back for a recheck in a week and a half. He told me I could go ahead and have my primary dentist start putting in permanent filings. Given my tendency to have things go wrong I'm going to wait until after the recheck. I don't wanna pay for filings and have to have them drilled out again.

Like I said, I never do anything simply. One of the teeth he worked on today had a root canal many, many years ago. When he x-rayed it today it showed that my body had started to resorb the root. He told me that if it abscesses again it will require surgery. Oh joy!

The anathesia is starting to wear off. I'm thinking tonight is not going to be fun. I have some pain med left from having the tooth pulled. I may take one pretty soon.
