I love nuts and would eat them all the time if I could.
My question is ... already knowing that oiled, salted nuts are not good ... what are safe raw nuts to eat? Some seem so loaded with fat and I am never sure if it is good fat or bad fat? Cashews - the best Almond - nice Brazil - so so Walnut - so so Pecan - another so so Hazelnut - hmmmm Macadamia - flip out yummie Regular peanut - cool I can't think what I have forgotten here ... any advice on nuts?

My preference is as follows:
1) Cashews, always. Trader Joe's has an AWESOME version - Black Peppered Cashews - YUM! 2) Almonds 3) Peanuts 4) Walnuts 5) seeds - sunflower, pinenuts, etc I don't like any of the other nuts you listed. Macadamia nuts are supposed to be loaded with saturated fat. Peanuts have the disadvantage of growing underground. Unless you can find organic peanuts (goes for peanut oil as well), apparently they are not super-safe to eat if you have sensitivities to pesticides. I am not sensitive to them, but obviously I don't want to ingest pesticides so I try to stay away from peanuts unless I've had a beer or two (and by then I don't care about either fat or pesticides... ;-) ) They all have tons of fat so I try not to eat too much of them, but I include them in oatmeal or eat them as a snack maybe 3-4 times/week. I'm not very strict about fat from nuts - I figure as snacks go, I could have worse habits. I'm sure there is a website that lists all of the fat content in various nuts. I'll leave that research up to the next guy...

Hehe .. I was too lazy to research which is why I posted here.
I forgot to mention seeds .. I love most seeds ... and I believe they are all safe. How sad that the nicest nuts have the most saturated fat.

Hi,
I think the best on your list may be raw almonds - it may be one of the ones which also offers the most health benefits. They're also easily found at many stores, shelled and ready to eat. If you have a Trader Joe's where you live, that's an excellent source. Walnuts are good as is, too. As others mentioned, some of the others have higher fat ratios (especially macadamia nuts, but peanuts also). But all nuts have positive benefits, including certain vitamins and other heart-healthy ingredients. The trick is to only eat a few (maybe 10-12, or a tiny handful) and once a day, a few days a week, that sort of thing. That's what I've read. Good luck! Take care, ERinBear

of what I can think tonight: peanuts can contribute to anemia.
Walnuts and almonds are both excellent, in moderation.
