I am 28 yrs old and have recently started experiencing Night Terrors. I have never had them before and it has been quite disturbing for me. Last night being my worst episode yet and they seem to be happening more frequently.
My question being, I just 1 month ago stopped taking Celexa, well was weaned gently off of it. I have had not serious symptons other then normal withddrawal and have been doing quite well. I wonder could my recent bought with a sleep disorder most common in Children be related? And if so What do I do? I am not located near my Doc any longer and am not really interested in seeing another, especially for this in fear they will only place me on more meds. I don;t understand why this is happening and it is very much so affecting my like including my job for lack of restfull sleep. I am so afraid to sleep after last night or even to be in my room. Has anyone one else experienced this as an adult and could it be related to discontinuing Antidepressant use? Please Help! |

Hello Shy,
Welcome to PC. I'm sorry you're having such a rough time. Many of us who have been abused have night terrors. I have them, but my Dr. has me on elavil to get rid of them. It works remarkably well. Don't be too fast to not want any other types of medication. Also, you might want to try therapy. It wasn't enough to help me with my night terrors, but it might help you. My very best to you, January

Given that they just started something may be off medically and physically. so my suggestion is to locate a physician that can rule out such things like anneryism, tumors and so on that may be causing chemical imbalances and pressure at key points in your brain. once those have been ruled out the doctor can recommend a psychiatrist, psychologist or other therapy professional that can help you to get to the bottom of the stress and or memories and or whatever that may be causing you to have night terrors mentally.
Night terrors can be caused by lots of things besides being abused such as stress at work, a death in the family, moving from one town, city, state and or country, alot of people adults and children in the military experience night terrors just because the job is a high stress and high relocation type job. Hang in there be it physical or mental the best thing I can say is see a medical doctor to rule out the physical and then if it turns out to be mental see the appropiate mental health professionals that can help you with this. |

Myself has some good points. A good nuerologist is a wonderful help. In fact, my nuerologist is the one who prescribed the elavil for me. Your neurologist can order tests for you. Also, I would go ahead and seek psychological help at the same time. I'm sure the psychiatrist can work with the nuerologist to find the answer to this.
My best, Jan

I'd ask around your family and see if others had it; apparently there is a strong genetic/family link:
