Is anyone else Vitamin D deficient? My mom is and I just got my blood work back today, my levels are at 14. The normal range is 30-50 so I have to take 5,000 units once a week. Merrr it kind of pisses me off that I have to take so many pills.
My cholesterol was 283, which is ridiculous because I'm 23, 5'3 and 125 pounds. No diabetes, not overweight, I don't smoke. I don't eat red meat. Ugh. I'm not sure if they're putting me on medication for that yet...I've been told it's genetic. I can't remember all these pills to take. :/.

It's good you are able to get the tests done you need and that you are taking good care of yourself at a young age.

I don't like taking a ton of pills either, so I got a prescription for Vit D that is taken only once a week. I take it on the weekend so it's easier to remember.

Not quite deficient, but my neurologist would like it added, as it can help repair the coating to my nervous system. I'm not a fan of adding more pills, to my life. I've added more vitamin d, to my life, by drinking more milk. Which has the calcium benefits, too. I'm at an age, where adding calcium can help keep my bones strong lifelong. Finding, it's benefiting my moods and sleep, too.

Bummer on cholesterol. Is is stress induced? Will there be retesting of it, before meds are the solution?

Don't know where to post.....I have been on almost every medicine for depression and finally about six years ago i was put on celexa, which worked great until recently. I am worse than ever. I finally got an appointment with a new pdoc for tomorrow. Will anyone please tell me what works for them so i can have some idea of what to get?

Vitamin D and calcium are important not only for bone strength, but it is very important for the nervous system. It has also been suggested that most psych meds will reduce the blood serum level of calcium/vit d. At least that is what my pdoc and gp have told me.

My calcium and vitamin D levels are also low.

Diet and exercise can improve your cholesterol w/o medications.

We just recently discovered I am deficient in vitamin D (level 8) and B 12, so now I take supplements and they'll check levels in a few months. Organizing meds is very important. I have a pill minder box that holds a week at a time and divides the day up into morning, noon, etc. I would have a very hard time managing otherwise.

It is really great you are getting checked to keep on top of this.
It can be frustrating to have to take more things but the vitamin D in particular as mentioned above affects and supports so many parts of our critical systems and functions. It is important to keep this at appropriate levels to stay safe. I personally want to make sure my body gets what it needs to function, just like I eat, sleep, etc. If I need to take another pill, then so be it be the repersussions otherwise are not worth it.

A bit of trivia: to maintain vitamin D, you can be out in the sun (full bodied exposure and no suncsreen) - if fair skinned for 10-15 minutes to get the required amount of sun to convert D. If you're already tan or of Hispanic origin, you need maybe 15 to 20 minutes. Black skin may require six times the sun exposure to make the same vitamin D levels as a very fair-skinned person. However, with skin cancer on the rise, sun exposure without sunscreen is not recommended. Also those in northern climates and many climates where full bodied exposure is not an option, is the reason why many are Vit D deficient.

There are two kinds of cholesterol, the kind influenced by diet (exogenous) and the the kind our body produces itself (endogenous), that is in no way affected by diet and is influenced by genetics. The total counts in labwork though reflect the combination of the two and does not separate them. Keeping it in check through diet, and if needed medication is sometimes necessary. Perhaps this link below might help with foods you can incorporate into your diet to help lower the overall totals; these foods can affect both endogenous and endogenous cholesterol levels:

Do what you need to to take care of you. Best wishes!

Did they say why you are deficient? I found out I have Hyperparathyroidism which causes vitamin D deficiency. My level was at 7 and I had to take 50,000 IUs once a week to get it back up. Now I take 6000 three times a week and 4000 every other day to keep them up. For some reason, a hyper parathyroid likes to suck it out of your body.

There are other reasons for it as well, and sometimes it's just a lack of sunshine and nutrition.. .just make sure you find out why so you're not going back and forth with it.
Thanks for this!

I read that close to 80% of adults in the USA are deficient in vitamin D.
