*sighs* Can someone help me settle this silly debate a friend of mine and I are having?
She insists that healthy adult humans can hold in their urine indefinitely; that for such people, voiding their bladder can only be a voluntary choice and that they can never lose control from holding it in / not having access to a bathroom for too long. I'm insisting that no human being can hold it in for as long as they want, unless "as long as they want" falls within their limit; and while limits vary, we all have one. At some point - voluntary or not and no matter what techniques you use - it will come out. We simply cannot store/carry an UNLIMITED amount. We also had this same debate about holding one's bowels before this. So she thinks any adult who has an accident must be experiencing some mental/physical ailment, fear, intoxication, or just didn't have enough will. I think, for anyone, it can mean any of those OR that time and toilet availability simply weren't on their side that day. |

Uh, you gotta be kidding me. Ask anyone with bladder/urinary problems what happens in a day - extreme pain, bloating in the lower pelvis if they can't void the bladder. Then, in 2-3-4 days, it can cause kidney disease, require dialysis to treat, and can be fatal.
"Acute urinary retention, a potentially life-threatening medical condition, requires immediate emergency treatment. Acute urinary retention can cause great discomfort or pain." Urinary Retention - National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse "Acute urinary retention can cause urine to overflow back into your kidneys, causing permanent kidney damage complication. Both acute and chronic urinary retention can lead to kidney disease or failure, that may require dialysis or a transplant just to keep you alive. So, always share your “can’t pee” symptom with your health care provider." Cause of Acute and Chronic Urinary Retention, Urine Retention, Inability to Urinate Symptoms ? Health Blurbs I realize your friend thinks it's voluntary, and the debate is about people with no inability, but the result, IF someone were capable of holding it that long, which is extremely unlikely, would be the same as for someone who couldn't urinate. |

Your friend is misinformed. If a person does hold their urine indefinitely, while continuing to ingest liquids, either the urine will come out through the urethra due to incontinence or the bladder will burst. In fact, the famous Danish astronomer Tycho de Brahe was said to have died because he held his urine so long at a banquet, thinking it would be rude to leave the table, that his bladder burst. He died a few days later.
Here's one account: Quote:
The ability to hold one's urine is related to control of pelvic floor muscles and many people lose strength and control as they age or give birth or have surgery. That's why people suffer the humiliation of incontinence. It's a real medical problem, not lack of will power. So ... your friend is just plain wrong. |

How old is your friend, and has she had children yet? I think those two things will change her mind eventually. Hopefully she will always be as strong and healthy as she is now. There are some who say the expression should be "TEMPORARILY able-bodied".

So... I'm right? Any normal person would eventually wet/soil themselves if they held it for long enough?
(Or die, in more extreme cases? Which I"m guessing voids the bladder, anyway.) My point was that sometimes time and lack of toilet availability are the only things to blame for accidents. It doesn't have to be because the person didn't have the "strength" or because they have some medical condition. This is why, personally, I don't find it humiliating at all; because it's something ANYONE can do. She thinks "limits" are a myth/excuse. My friend is 21 and has two children. |

Tell her to wait 30 years and see how well she "voluntarily" controls her bladder. lol.
I've read that holding it in can cause urinary tract infections too. BTW..you win this one ![]()

I'm trying to make her understand that even age is irrelevant in my point: even a perfectly healthy 20-something-year-old can't hold it forever, and will eventually wet/soil themselves. You can't will your body to have unlimited storage space. That's physically impossible.

LOL, I don't think I "won" anything. Here I have a friend with fantasy expectations of the human body. God forbid she ever finds herself in a situation where she can't get to a toilet for, I dunno, a whole weekend (which has happened to me before). I think it's really sad when people shame themselves for having universal human vulnerabilities. It doesn't mean you're sick, or a failure. Anyway, sorry if this is all silly. I just feel like the laws of physics are seriously being slandered here. And Google provides no answers. So I came here. |

I didn't mean to sound like a smart aleck. It's just as you age certain things don't perform like they used to. Yes, we are all human, but we do have limitations. I don't know if the story about a burst bladder is true. I think you would pee whether you wanted to or not. And don't worry about being silly, it keeps you young.

Well, if she is young and healthy, she should do it herself and see how that goes for her. She is either delusional or just not able to admit she is wrong.

From her age, and the fact that she has two kids, she might be in the middle of toilet training. So whatever her logic, im afraid her vote is outnumbered by them anyway. Good luck to her!

Just tell her a really good joke, and maybe she won't be able to hold it in any longer.

Slip a couple of Lasix or Bumetanide tablets in that iced tea and she'll have a real challenge, LOL.

I cannot believe that she said it, having had two children. She seems to be extremely controlling in a really weird, grotesque way.
The rule of hygiene for women is to void the bladder as soon as possible to avoid urinary tract infections. I have no idea about men, but as was pointed out above by SnakeCharmer, extreme patience led one man to his grave... If this conversation ever returns, ask her how long she'd be willing to not drink any liquids. Because if she believes that a healthy human has full control of the outflow of liquid, she should be able to demonstrate equally limitless control of the inflow. |

Well pretty sure I do not have any health issues to do with that...and I cannot hold urine indefinably, when I need to go I need to...now sure I can feel when I may need to go soon but know I can wait for a while. But there have been plenty of times I barely make it to a toilet on time and find it difficult to hold it long enough to get pants down. I have also had to just go outside, due to lack of bathrooms...of course if I end up doing that I find somewhere discreet with trees/bushes I can hide in.
Also though pretty sure its not healthy to try and hold it when you feel like you need to go, of course I am sure everyone has because they gotta go but have to wait a little longer for whatever reason...but still probably not healthy.
