What's first appointment with a gastroenterologist like? I was diagnosed with colitis but I already feel better. My friend said Dr will probably wNt to do a colonoscopy. You think so?

Hello HALLIEBETH87: The Skeezyks does not know the answer to your question. But I thought I would just mention that I've now had two colonoscopies. It's a pain... figuratively speaking... but it's a good idea.... My best wishes to you...

I'm only 29 but have family history of colon cancer so I know I'll have to get them early but I don't want one this early! Lol

Yup. They'll send you for a colonoscopy because of your family history. I had my first at 31. If it comes out clear, you probably won't have to repeat for awhile. Mine wasn't -- some precancerous polyps, so I have to have it done every three years.

My grandmas parents and brother all
Died from colon cancer and she's had polyps before.

Fyi very detailed info---------
Along with my lower right quadrant pain and tenderness to touch and finding of thickened colon wall on ct, the following has happened:

------------------

I'd forgotten while occasionally a small hemmorhoid bothers me, I have a few times found blood after evacuating my bowels. I've had strong urges to have to go and struggled with both diarrhea and constipation. Could this be colitis related?

I had to have a colonoscopy early also because my dad died from colon cancer. I think I was 45 when I had mine which is not as early as some people. The worst thing about a colonoscopy really is the prep. I have been to gastroenterologists a lot. Usually they will probably do a physical on the first visit, ask you about your symptoms and then schedule you for the procedure. That is what I am guessing.

They would definitely want to do one if you are seeing a GI doctor. Upper and lower GI symptoms can be vague and not valid enough for a diagnosis of something or a clean bill of health.

Of course, you do not have to get scoped. Make sure you ask the doctor before to explain why s/he wants you to be scoped and go from there. If your insurance is paying or something similar, scope procedures of any sort are virtually harmless. But, I'm not sure how much the procedure would cost out of pocket.

I think Medicare covers those procedures. Don't know how often but this would be your first

I've never had a colonoscopy, but I've had 2 endoscopies - they're painless. They'll knock you out for them, so you won't remember anything.
