as some here know I spent 2 and a half days in the hospital this week. I had a bad pinpointed headache and kind of got confused. my mind and mouth would not work together. so they admitted me into the hospital for more tests. one thing they found is that my bloodsugar was way too high. 238. next morning it was still at 236. so they gave me insulin for the time I was in there. I had a very mild TIA which is a very small stroke.
As most know here I recently quit smoking. I am going thru a strange thing in my head with having to give up everything at one time. makes me want to just smoke and eat wrong all over again. I wonder what is the point of all the changes. I just really want to curl up and cry.

((bebop))

On my birthday last January, I also had a TIA. Second one.
I was really, really POd when told what I should give up.

It's ok to curl up and cry and swear a bit if you want. These are life altering things and came at you hard...much as I hate to say it, baby steps (again!) to acceptance.
Mild or not, the TIA will still have affects on your brain functions, and I hope you were educated about what to expect.
Add in your diabetes, and you are faced with another challenge.

Please be kind to yourself,
Cap

bebop, I'm sorry about your TIA and diabetes. But you seem to be taking charge of your health, getting diabetic cook books. I'm proud of you for quitting smoking, and hope you'll be an inspiration for me to quit. Take good care of yourself. We're thinking about you.

bebop, it's OK to feel discouraged. Life gave you a couple of hard knocks this week. Take care. We're here for you.

wow, I just reread your post about your cookbooks arriving in 4 weeks...4 weeks?

there are cooking sites that I use for diabetic recipes
eatingwell.com
(dinner made easy) bettycrocker.com
allrecipes.com

all three have some very good recipes for diabetics and for heart healthy...some are really quite good and others are really quite yucky.
I like to use my slow cooker so I've adapted some of them.
Cook once but eat three times 'cause I'm lazy...the reason I have a large slow cooker. Leftovers can be stored in the fridge, taken out and heated up--in the same pot. If there's any left after the second serving, I put it in a microwave safe container and cook the final portion then.
Gee, I'm lazy about cooking now!

those are the three I like best; however I think the Diabetes foundation may have more recipes.

It did take me a few weeks to get used to less sugar!
Honestly? I craved sugar just like I did when I was getting clean and sober...'course alcohol is converted to sugar so there is a connection (simple explanation)
The only artificial sweetener I can tolerate is sweet&low...the others make it impossible for anyone to be in a closed room with me

Like anything else, it takes a wee bit of getting used to...
my biggest surprise was I dropped about 12lbs within 3 weeks just from cutting out legal coke and other sugary drinks.

Ramble, ramble from this old bag
but I didn't want you to wait on those cooking books

My very best wishes,
Cap

Mine told me if God didn't grow it, don't eat it...chicken and fish were included, though.
I think the doc meant my donuts, Cans of Hershey syrup--said that with reverence--cola, etc. weren't natural, therefore processed, so Throw The Stuff Out

http://www.dlife.com has a ton -- as in, like, thousands -- of recipes, and all the information you could ever want about everything to do with diabetes.

http://www.diabeticrockstar.com is a fun new support group.

I was dx'd the day after my bday in April and I'm STILL p*ssed off about it, so here's big hugs to ya, Be.

If you have cable, dLife also has a show every Sunday night on CNBC. It's on here at 6 pm -- I'm on Central time, so adjust accordingly.

I suck, but am not up to talking about it. But thanks for asking.

It is too cold to go dig it out of my car right now, but there is also a fast-food guide you can buy and leave in your glovebox for when the grease urge hits . It has carb counts, etc for all kinds of places. I'll let you know the name when I remember it or go get it, whichever comes first.

(Edited to add: Never mind, here it is :-) http://www.fastfoodfacts.com/

Diet cola...depends on what artificial sweetener
Anything other than sweet&low makes it impossible to be in the same room with me
Watch out, though, if I have the house to myself!

candybear, I still have days of being POd and will drain a can of Hershey syrup right there in the store before I paid for it.
It's good the manager knows me.

Honestly? I thought it was grossly unfair (read Pout) that I had to give up my favorites--after all, I gave up alcohol, illegal drugs, and now my cigarette smoking has decreased immensely.
I thought I deserved at least one vice--Sugar!

Since I was fourteen, I've been borderline hypoglemic and it really does affect your mood. I get depressed and pass out when my level drops to about fifty. Usually because I haven't been eating consistantly or the right things. But it is so hard! And I'm inspired by the changes you all have made with quitting smoking, eating right, probably starting new meds that affect your mind too. So just keep working at it, it will all work out.
