Ever since this cold that I had started to break up, I can't stop coughing! You see, this wouldn't be so bad if it didn't get to the point were it's like I've coughed so much my body doesn't know how to do it properly anymore...

I know I'm suppossed to be coughing up all the crap that's in my lungs from when I had the cold but there is nothing really left to cough! It's just like my body activated hyper-cough mode and can't shut itself back off.

And there are time when I feel a cough coming on, but at the very last second I hold my breath and that leads to me choking ...on air. Yes, it is possible (apparently) to choke on air if you hold your breath randomly during a coughing fit.

NOT FUN Can't stop coughing

It's possible that even when you've coughed up all the mucus that your airways are still irritated and that can trigger the cough. Once I had a bad cough with a cold, and the cough lingered weeks after the cold had gone.

I know the agony. I had a very bad chest cold last year and teh coughing just wouldn't stop. The doctor gave me a bronchial medication that help to bring everything up, and cough suppressant for teh evenings and a puffer to open the air passages.

The puffer did a great job!

I have a cough too but mine is asthma/smoking. I know the two together dont' really mix but oh well. I am going to my doc tomorrow to hopefully get on some antibiotics and get some better cough syrup as I think I've got bronchitis again. I get it quite often as I have scar tissue in my lungs from a suicide attempt.

I hope your cough goes away soon and I'll pass you some Tussin DM.

My son had a similiar problem and the dr recommended musinex (sp? commercial about the mucus packing up and leaving) it thins the phlem an allows you to get rid of it.

The only cough syrup that I've ever had that works is Rx, Tussenx something. It's as thick as honey, taste like crap, but it stops the coughing.
