a friend of mine told me this once when i was in high school... we are no longer in touch so i can't ask her for any more details, sorry if it seems a bit.. well.. not detailed, vague.

what she told me was that when she was having a shower, somewhere in her neck/chest area (can't remember exactly) she started bleeding, and there was no visible wound or injury or anything. of course she got freaked out but did not go to the hospital. i got the impression that the blood somehow seeped through her skin.

i tried to urge her to go to the hospital but she said she didn't want to for some reason. was she just making this up? can this really happen?

anyone have any info?

as you see it's not an urgent matter.. but i've been wondering about it every now and then. i asked once about it in a community on livejournal, and got a reply that it might be an infection of sorts and she needed to go to the hospital immediately.

i knew her for about two or three years after this incident and she was fine.... so its kinda weird to me.

I don't know with absolute certainty, but I would have to say that I don't think this is possible. Without getting too detailed, I'll just say that blood can not pass through the cells making up the tissues of the epidermal system (skin); the way the cells are constructed and work together do not allow it, there has to be some kind of opening in both the epidermis AND whatever type of blood vessel is involved. Even in hemorrhagic illness (ex: ebola), the blood must find an opening.

I believe blood can seep through pores when a person has taken too much of some medications, like Heparin.

it could be she was just making it up, wanting attention.

i don't think there is a chance she could have gotten anticoagulants... those are usually available as injection fluid over here. though she did occasionally report taking too much ibuprofen or paracetamol.

thanks for the input guys, it has eased my mind a bit.

It's hard to think of how this would happen under normal circumstances. I can think of a couple of other situations. If she had been sunburned recently, and had peeling skin in that area, sometimes the skin is very tender. If some of the skin came off in the shower, it may have peeled off too many layers (especially if she had a severe sunburn) and it could have bled a bit in the shower....especially if she was picking at it or peeled it herself, which is a temptation when one has had a sunburn! Also, if she used a loofah or wash cloth, and had very sensitive skin, perhaps it opened up a weakened area (maybe, again, for a similar reason, if she'd had a recent sunburn or something) and there was a bit of blood seeping there.

I think this scenario would be very unusual. Hopefully it ended very quickly for her and she was okay after that!

Take care,
ErinBear

thanks for your reply erinbear, thankfully enough it wasn't anything serious as we were very frequently in touch for two years after this incident and she was fine.
