Surely I should be able to eat a kitkat without going deaf!

Every time I eat a kitkat I go deaf in my left ear. It happens when I eat ice lollies as well. I remember a few years ago doing a post about that and no one here knew what an ice lolly was! (a lolly made out of ice)

I'm annoyed that I've gone deaf in one ear again, ok I have another ear but it's really frustrating particularly when answering the phone or trying to listen to music. What did you say?

I don't think anything can be done about it, I'll have to wait a few days and then it'll be ok again.

Flipping kitkats.

(((((((((( Pegasus ))))))))) I can't possibly think of what might cause that. Just kitkats? Or do other biscuits do the same thing? Maybe it might be worth asking the doctor (or even the dentist?) when you're there or it might not be worth it.

probably no-one knows what kitkats are either

Nothing to do with cats if anyone is wondering

Ha ha, thanks for making me laugh Silver!

I think it is because it is crunchy. I don't eat biscuits, just the occasional kitkat.

Just really annoying, ya know!

no idea hon what might cause that. In the states a kitkat is a chocolate candy bar. lol ice lollies...in the states we have this thing that is like a koolaid type thing in a long plastic tube (flat) and you freeze them. I suspect it is pretty much the same as your ice lollies. maybe? hehe

why is the lemon lolly green?????
shouldn't it be an obnoxious yellow color??? that color green makes me want to rename the pictured one pine tree lolly.

oh and i'm really glad you explained the ice lolly thing...i figured the kitkats out (all by myself!!!! and i haven't even had breakfast yet...i'm so proud) but the lolly thing..well.

as far as the deafness thing...sorry i have no useful insight ...just some smart *** questions...i'd say it would be due to crunching and maybe pinching a nerve or something but then everything crunchy would do it.

oh wait...an idea....
could it be something weird like tri-geminal neuralgia? when i have a flair up and have a piece of chocolate (and let it melt in my mouth) it can trigger a spasm in my throat...but only on my left side...doesn't happen with everything i eat...like i said only certain foods...must be the texture or something.

then it could be awful for a few months and poof it subsides (but does does entirely go away) until the next bad flare up.
Thanks for this!

Thanks for your input stumpy.

The green lolly isn't yellow because I couldn't be bothered to search for hours for a picture of a yellow lolly. So it's green, although I have never had a green one before to be honest, usually orange ones but... nevermind!!!

It's possible that other crunchy food stuffs do the same thing but I haven't researched it that much. Just noticed that I love to eat a kitkat occasionally but am doomed not to enjoy it. I know that my hearing will return eventually, but perhaps need to write a note to self not to eat kitkats in future.

"Flippin' Kitkats"??

You are so funny, Pegs!

Hon, I think Stumpy may have something there with the "... mialgia" thing. I'd encourage you to talk to either a dentist or an MD. If you stop eating Kitkats and "Popsicles" you're only masking what could be wrong. (I knew what you were talking about when I read "ice lollies"! We have Lolly Pops here and you suck on them but they're hard candy with a Tootsie Roll in the center [chewy chocolate] so it stands to reason that an ICE lollie is something made out of ice that you suck on, right? )

Don't let it go, Babe. Have it looked at, ok?

just a pondering thing..

does it also sometimes give you a weird pain/spasm in your jaw on either side? I was told that this is a form of TMJ when certain foods(usually strongly sweet/sour or other strong taste) gives you sort of a weird pain in your jaw.

Might have something to do with that?

Or maybe your toungue likes chocolate so much that it focuses on that sense only and accidentally blocks your hearing

Thanks SeptemberMorn and Rainbowzz

I will mention it to a Doctor next time I see one. I don't get pain in the face but a massive headache and ringing in the ear, then deafness. The deafness usually lasts for several days.

Thinking about it, pork scratchings used to do the same thing, now they are the crunchiest thing on the planet. I must have made a mental note not to eat them ever again.

I'm gonna miss those kitkats!

Sorry Pegasus,

I haven't got any ideas as to why you might have a problem with eating those foods. Possibly an nerve thing? When you are visiting the doctor next maybe you could ask them?

The picture was helpful for ice lolly. AKA in Australia Icy poles - lol.
But no need to research on Kit Kats, I love em. Especially the caramel ones.

Take care

Possum

I wonder if its a nerve thing, somewhere when you crunch a certain way something is getting pinched off somewhere in your jaw./face/neck somewhere like that... its certainly very strange isin't it?
Thanks for this!

Thanks all.

Got a bit of hearing back this morning but still ringing/buzzing going on. You'd think I'd actually stuck the kitkat in my ear!

stumpy! You are welcome to my kitkits if you would like to come and get them, although you'll have to knock on my door pretty hard as I might not hear you!

((((((Pegasus))))))))))))) Now, I've never heard of that happening at all... but perhaps it is a form of TMJ, when your jaw locks? Unfortunately one thing goes wrong on your head and the entire rest of the head suffers along with it.

Now, don't go eating more of the offending foods until you get it figured out, ok?

Bummer Pegasus!

It's definitely an inner ear thing. Whether it is an allergy, or due to the TMJ misbehaving (or both) only you are going to be able to determine.

I would suspect if it's allergy that it's a particular ingredient in the kitkat that you find in a few other forgettable items. Maybe time to make note of the ingredients first?

If it's crunchy foods, then a dentist who specializes in TMJ disorders (known as TMD here) will help you prevent further damage to the joint. A physical therapist can help too, should it be the TMJs.

These types of issues are rarely easy to figure out. I mean, who's to say that when you eat a kitkat you do so because you are stressed out and due to the stress you don't sleep well and grind your teeth which in turn causes the tinitus? DOH!

At least I know what caused mine... the industrial accident. I have constant tinitus in one ear causing hearing loss. The other ear just doesn't hear well, due to the same accident. (What I have is called Menierre's though.)

If giving up one food item will prevent this, I think I'd do it eagerly!
Feel better soon.

Ah! This sounds the most plausible! Thank you Sky.

Thank you everyone I'll get it checked out.

This is something I found about TMJ/TMD -

Quote:
Hearing problems

Since the temporomandibular joint is close to the ears, injury or irritation to the TMJ can cause various ear symptoms, such as earaches, loss of hearing, and tinnitus or ringing in the ear.
Note that these hearing symptoms are not only a result of a TMJ dysfunction. They can be caused by problems completely separated from TMJ. For example, tinnitus may be caused by working around loud noises or taking too much aspirin or ibuprofen.
For this reason, many TMJ sufferers often first see their family doctor and an ear specialist before even considering seeing a dentist. Unfortunately, many ear specialists do not seem to consider TMJ and would rather prescribe a hearing aid as a solution.
Dizziness

If you are occasionally dizzy or disoriented, it may be an indication of TMJ dysfunction. This is because the inner ear--which is the area for the sense of balance--may be inflamed due to the TMJ problem.
Hold onto those kitkat bars (((((((( pegs )))))))))) I'll come pick them up next time I visit

Hope you are hearing ok now and get to the root of the problem soon!

Thanks very much for the information sabby!

Makes a lot of sense. I did some google searches also and it backs it up especially as there seems to be a pattern to it. Me and dentists don't get on so I'm sticking to soft food at the moment! My hearing has returned but still have the buzzing/ringing going on.

Nice store of kitkats in the cupboard, just wondering if they'll taste just as good if I melt them.
