Hi Friends,

In an effort to keep my Great Dane from killing a possum, who had wandered up on our back deck in the early afternoon, I wound up banging my head between the door frame, and the back door.

I was successful in keeping the possum alive, he immediately played dead, after my Great Dane put his jaws around him. I have since seen him walking around (the possum), so he lives.

I wound up going to the ER after my mishap. I was diagnosed with a mild concusion and sent home. My symptoms have continued to change around, with some new ones surfacing. I was told by a nurse at my doctor's office, I will probably have symptoms for two weeks. Well I'm at the beginning of my second week.

I saw my regular physician in the office on Friday, for yearly maintenance. I told her about my concusion, and how I felt like I was walking at a slight angle on Thursday, when I had to make my 70-mile trek (oneway) to the campus to teach. She sent me over for a CAT scan, which I passed, as in no slow bleeding.

I just can't put my thoughts and words together as quickly as usual, although I had a GREAT first class on Thursday.

Anyone else been down this road?

EJ

sounds like a concussion to me...brains bang around during a concussion..they get bruised..it takes a little time for things to heal and settle down which is why you are having some delayed reactions.

i would keep your dr informed and just be careful to not bang thing around for a while. if things get worse or change significantly i'd let them no ASAP but otherwise i'd just keep cursing the possum.

and not for nothing...my one dog's personal favorite is groundhogs. we got to a dog park...a totally fenced in dog park. last spring he killed 5 of them inside the dog park. big ones. made me even crazier than i was before. made my blood pressure even higher than it was. didn't seem to bother him at all (he did get bit 4 times by one but he wore those bites like a badge of honor).

my other boy (the one in the picture) couldn't kill a dead animal if it landed on his feet. but produce...that he can kill...damn fool dog loves to steal tomatoes out of my garden, and avacodos, peaches, apples, plums etc off of the counter.

Stumpy,

Thank you for your note. It was very reassuring and comforting.

What kind of dogs do you have? One is obviously a carnavore, and the other a vegetarian. How funny!

EJ, I stopped counting the number of times I've had a concussion at the ninth one! What you describe sounds fairly typical. I agree with stumpy, avoid banging your head and let the doc know ASAP if things change or get worse.
Thanks for this!

thanks for asking about the dogs...one is a pure basset hound (the picture)...and the other is a basset/english setter mix....both are rescues...the younger one (the purebred) is 3 is from staten island, nyc and the other is from tennesse and is 9.

the older one enjoys camping and hiking while the younger one panics if he isn't on a sidewalk and can't hear traffic...they are opposites but brothers now never the less. and together they ground me but make me crazy too!

concussions are slow healing..think about the football and hockey players who sometimes are forced to retire due to multiple concussions and the long term effects they cause. when you hit your head the brain sloshes back and forth inside the skull and it bruises...and those bruises take time to heal.

I seem to be on a roll. My middle St. Bernard, Baby Girl, pushed the French Door into my head about a week after the incident with the Great Dane. Fortunately, my head didn't sustain as big a blow as the first time around.

I am continuing to feel better each day.

Hi Stumpy,

Your dogs sound great.

I'm originally from NY. I've been to Staten Island.

My dogs ground me, and make me crazy too.

Two of our six dogs were "Special Deliveries", that is, they were dropped off by someone. We have three St. Bernards, one was a rescue -- she fractured my right ankle in May 2007. Then there is the Great Dane, who we also rescued. Now I need someone to rescue me.

We are currently living on 18 acres in Kansas. There are rolling hills, and one-third of our property is treed.

Thank you for describing what happens to your brain when you have a concusion. Are you a nurse? I haven't had one since I was a child.

Stumpy,

I am so sorry you are such a fount of knowledge on concusions from growing up in an abusive household.

We tried to help an older child, who was 12, by adopting her nine years ago. She came from a similar environment.

I'm sorry you suffered a broken ankle from an encounter with your dog. Missy ran around my ankles with her lead, and then took off. I went down like a large tree. I'm still trying to get my ankle straightened out.

The EMT people who came to get me that day were really great!!

I hope you're feeling better by now, EJ! The possum still lives, but how about the great dane! :-)

I've never had a concussion (I don't think!) but did have Meniere's syndrome for 3-4 years with vertigo that wasn't fun; I can sympathize with the walking sideways.

Oh no, I did giggle ... but not at you, the silly possum! Lucky little bugger that you were around to save its hide!

(((((((((((((((EJ))))))))))))))))))) How's the head?

Don't recall ever having a concussion myself, but I likely did when I was a kid... nasty experience with a flight of cement stairs!

Hi Perna,

The Great Dane does still live.

He got off his lead this morning. Fortunately, he came back when we called him. In his mind b/c he was watched our littlest dog, Gracie, get a ride in the car after she returns from running away, he ran right up to the truck and asked for a ride. We'll have to give him a ride, when things aren't so snowy and frigid. We've had temps below freezing for five days now.

Hi EJ,

Just saw your post when I noticed I hadn't seen you around for awhile.....dang possum....I know how much the dogs love to go after critters.....they go brain dead & no notice to what they do to anyone around them...ouch. I am sure your head is better by now.....I can relate....I can remember having 4 concussions that stand out in my mind...

Started as a child when I was running around the play ground & someone ran into me & we crashed to the pavement.

All the rest have been as an adult:
....playing racquettball, I was always running into the wall with my head when I was going for a shot...remember one I could feel my brain hitting the other side of my skull.....saw stars with that one. I don't remember much about the after effects on any of them.....went right back to work without even a headache???? how that was possible....have no idea.

2 horse incidents really hurt.....
.....when my horse stumbled during a trail ride. He was going blind & didn't see the little mound of dirt & I was chatting not paying attention. He went down, gashing his front leg with the shoe of hit other front foot & I went off over his neck onto my head....lucky I had my helmet on, but I must have been knocked out for a few seconds at least....that is what they told me. All I remember is jumping up & wondering what happened & my helmet was all smashed. Don't let anyone tell you desert sand is soft.....baked in the sun....it's harder than rock. We wrapped my horses leg & my trainer ran her horse back to the ranch to get her truck & trailer to take us both back to the ranch where the vet was waiting to sew up his leg. It wasn't until late that day when I got away from the ranch because I had to make sure my horse was ok before I took care of me. I remember everything being blurry & couldn't focus at all....could just do the things I needed to help the vet but was really dizzy for several days.

.......other concussion was also horse related when I was caring for Izzy's strangles sore on her throat. I was standing between her & the pipe railing. I hit something that hurt & she pulled back & then slammed me into the pipe rail.....somehow, I remember my head being slammed back & forth between the rails about 4-5 times before she suddenly stopped & just stood there. I got the lead rope unhooked from her halter & she came over to me & nuzzled my head to see if I was ok. I had lumps in several places on my head & again, I couldn't focus & my head felt like it had been pressed in a vice......That also took days to get over the blurry stuff & the brusing took forever to go away. Leanred never tie up a horse when I'm working on something like that.....they will just pull back & not come slamming foward if they aren't tied.....hard way to learn something so simple.

These things have nothing to do with the migraine pain I am on medication for.....they say that is from the neck injury I had from being thrown off a horse in college.....even the fusion didn't help the migraine pain.

Hope your dogs have stopped with the problems.....I know for me, with 6 dogs there is always 1 that is getting into something.

Debbie

EJ, I'm sorry you are hurt!

Those pets and possums (you had one in your garage a while back, didn't you?) are sure hard on you!
