I was wondering if anyone has read the story "The Fog Prince" by EdithTinkov? My 6 yr old son brought it home from school for a homework reading assignment . I don't want to come across as "taking things too seriously," but I was suprised that the author conveyed in the story that "disobeying is ok and it pays off." I know it's just a story but i cannot help thinking, "why couldn't the princess obey her dad and then her good behavior lead to the prince of her dreams." Instead, she disobeyed, threw a fit and abused an animal then was rewarded by meeting the man of her dreams. Anyone else find it odd and and a rather poor choice for assigned reading?

Sounds pretty accurate to the Grimm version.

Did you turn the moment into a brief chat with your son about his feelings about disobedience and tossing animals?

That's exactly what i did. Perhaps that was the intent? I also related to cartoons in the sense of entertainment only.

As far as intent, it's probably better to reach out to the educator and have a chat about her teaching plans. Around here, teachers value input and outreach from parents.
As a mom, I've had plenty of lessons that have come home that have led to a variety of in home extended teachable moments. It's up to us parents to add to their path and create children that can freely think for themselves. Can you tell that I was raised in an educator's home? Or that I come from a family of educators? I never pursued that path myself, was veered away due to, as my aunt said, too many politics.
The school district that my children are in have been working towards more family engagement. Trying to shift the mindset that it's an authoritative instution of sorts.

It's great that you could add depth to his lesson.

You’re right. Yucky ending! She slams the frog against the wall. He turns into a handsome prince with “kind eyes”. They get married the next day. The end. WTH?

I grew up with this fairy tale. Maybe that’s why my marriage is so screwed up.
