I've been on welfare for a year while I make my way through the SS disability process. It's a special program where I'm required to see my therapist weekly and prove I'm working towards getting "better" (hah!), but I don't have to work. Well, this morning my welfare caseworker told me that because I only see my psychiatrist every three months, they're going to deny me continuation on this program.
I'll be required to start working a minimum of 30 hours per week to get my $380 a month from welfare. I tried to explain to my caseworker that my psychiatrist only manages my medication and nothing else, and my therapist does the real work with me, but she said her hands are tied. I don't know what to do. I simply CAN'T work. There's no way it's possible. And even if I did try to work 30 hours/week, I wouldn't be able to continue the disability process (waiting for a hearing now). This new stressor is pushing me over the edge. :'( I don't know what to do!!! |

Are there maybe any other welfare types of programs that could help while applying for disability...doesn't make sense they would require you to work to get a little money to live on till you get Disability when you wouldn't be applying for disability if you could work.
That program just sounds ridiculous...I don't think psychiatrists typically meet with patients once a week, it would certainly be more common for the therapist to do that...I only see mine every 3 months if that to discuss meds/issues with them/if changes should be made, nothing else really. So yeah sounds like an annoying thing to deal with.

I just found out that they're making work mandatory for those receiving food stamps. So there goes food for my kids, too. Great....

This is just an idea as I have no experience in your situation: I would consider writing a letter to your caseworker ccing her supervisor. In that letter I would politely, concisely, and clearly explain what you said above and confirm that you heard her correctly that they have no options for you in your circumstances. The point of writing is to have your case in writing. Sometimes creating a written record is enough to get additional help or a second opinion.

Hi,
I think the member here Shortandcute had a similar problem. Maybe you could post a message on her page?

I believe that they have to show you the laws that have been changed or why they are now considering that you are not able to participate in that specific program. Word of mouth is not sufficient and you should be able to ask for the proof of their determination.
I'm sorry for all the stress you are under right now. Something doesn't seem right. ![]() |
