I just got out of the hospital a couple of weeks ago for intrusive thoughts of violence toward myself. I was starting to make moves toward acting them out and I could have been hurt. I am also very paranoid at times.

At the hospital, the doctor said I was suffering from a "psychotic process". Are the thoughts of OCD considered psychosis? I ask because I had my new p-nurse yesterday tell me that my thoughts are consistent with OCD.

I am pondering a very similar question. I haven't been dx'd OCD (I have however bitten my nails for as long as I can remember) but I have had suicidal thoughts - in my opinion this is what they are: THOUGHTS. Yes, I might have acted on them (once did) but they are not voices. How does this translate into psychosis?

I would say no, intrusive thoughts that relate to OCD are not psychosis. These are two different things.
Thanks for this!

Any other thoughts?

I know that paranoia is a psychosis symptom and psychosis can be a symptom of other disorders.

The images are completely out of my control; they happen at random and were very frightening. I am having a better time now that I am on Abilify which is an antipsychotic. That is why I wonder if intrusive thoughts are a form of psychosis.

Psychosis is more of a "state" rather than an illness with it's own symptoms. Paranoia may go along with it and be wrapped up in it but it's a bit like having a cold and with the cold you have cough and sore throat and headache, stuffy nose, etc. Lots of other things might cause coughs, sore throats, headaches and stuffiness, one doesn't identify a cold from those symptoms but from the whole picture. Same with psychosis but the main thing with a psychotic episode is the being out of touch with reality, that's the most important thing; kind of like the cold actually being a cold germ that will be gone in about a week; when the being out of touch with reality goes away, the psychosis will be gone.

So, if you are not out of touch with reality, the symptoms you are having are probably related to your OCD. Being psychotic makes it pretty impossible to "worry" about intrusive thoughts and how to help make them go away because you are not dealing with reality well so don't even realize the thoughts are not real. If you know the thoughts are thoughts and not really what is happening (whether you feel what you see/think is controllable by you or not) then it is something other than psychosis.

Your reply tells me that I was having a psychosis when I went into the hospital. I thought that everyone was out to get me and that random people were going to kill me, I thought that my neighbors and friends thought I was weird and hated me. The images I was having were probable intrusive thoughts but when I began acting them out, I think it was the psychosis getting to me. It wasn't until I was in the hospital that I could recognize what what going on and that I was able to interpret what I had gone through.
I probably had several things going on at once.

Thank you for the explanation.
