Hello all.

As a kid I would always get these thoughts of harming others. Insulting them about anything my mind could possibly generate and hurting them which usually results in graphic images.. I still have these thoughts today and they are accompanied by two other problems. I am stuck with the number 10, I've had this as a kid as well. I must turn on the stove 10 times.. or pet that dog ten times or else I'll get bad luck or whatever. The other one is that I am a bit of a germophobe. When people sneeze I just freak out, I know better than to go all crazy over it but I absolutely hate it. And I can't stand when one doesn't wash their hands after they go to the bathroom. There's a bunch of other little things that I hate also but I don't want to make this post way too long.

So any feedback on this? It doesn't bother me as much as it sounds.

I needn't pretend to diagnose you or help you self-diagnose.

But as for the first one. Imagine you are at sea on a raft. Around you in the sea are bits of flotsam and jetsam. Sometimes they come alongside your raft for a while before they gradually drift away. Most people whom I hear from, get what I call mental flotsam and jetsam. When I get it I say to myself, well that's a fairly daft thought, I expect it will gradually drift away, and it does. The main thing is not to take it too seriously - not to own it - which would be dangerous to do. Are we right in assuming you wouldn't actually consider harming anyone?

The middle one (about 10s) sounds to my amateur ear a bit like an obsession! On my own obsessions I found the book "Brain Lock" by Dr Geoffrey M Schwartz lifechanging on just one reading, it offers such a simple programme. When out and about I say to myself, well it can be fun only stepping on cracks but on this occasion I am going to walk in a simple fashion.

As for the third, I think it is quite level-headed to expect people to clean their hands well in your space. Do you ask them to do so in a straightforward way?

It depends on the situation, really. If it is family or a friend, I know that they are aware that I hate it when one sneezes so most of the time they will do so. If they don't then I'll ask them to do so straightforward. If they do not, I'll be sort of avoidant of their hands until they wash them.

As for others, I'll just give them a subtle hint that they should wash their hands. However if they don't, I will try to avoid their hands as much as possible -- without appearing impolite.

I personally would rather a person sneeze into a tissue and cover their mouth and then wash their hands or use hand sanitizer. This isn't a problem around my family and friends because we are all pretty much that way, and if someone doesn't do it that way, we don't think anything about handing them a tissue and a bottle of sanitizer. As far as the bathroom, we have a sign posted in the restrooms saying "If you don't wash your hands, don't shake mine."

Sounierre ...

Basically everything that you described in your initial post here on this thread is indicative of some level of OCD (in my opinion).

The intrusive thoughts of harming others, the fixation on the number "10", having to perform compulsions in groups of ten, and the fixation on germs / catching something from someone who sneezes or fails to wash their hands properly after using the bathroom are all classic symptoms of OCD.

Now, as you mentioned at the conclusion of your post "It doesn't bother me as much as it sounds", well then, if it isn't bothering you to the point of interfering with your quality of life, then I wouldn't become overly worried about it. However, once again, they are classic symptoms of OCD.

I'd keep the option open of possibly going to see a mental health specialist who may be able to prescribe you something to lessen the severity of your symptoms (possibly an SSRI medication such as Zoloft or Prozac) -or- may suggest some form of therapy / CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy).

Hope this helped.

Take care,

people sneezing, is that with or without a tissue? without is considered to some socially impolite, with a tissue is considered to some to being socially responsible.

other people hand washing after bathroom break, unless your stood over there shoulder in the bathroom how would you know for sure if they had washed there hands or not, thats speculation not phobic

and the patting of the dog 10 times? a dog irrespective of its sex will gladly sit there all day licking its own "chocolate starfish" whether your watching it or not and yet you will still pat it repeatedly, germophobe you is not.

nor i suspect are you any longer a child harboring "murderous intentions", you might have been once but you didn't act out on those fantasies, they have stayed where they have always been, fantasies in your head.

why the number 10?

It definitely sounds like OCD. Good luck!

OCD per se is a disorder, by definition... and one doesn't meet the criteria simply from having behaviours that are obsessive or compulsive, oddly. To be considered as OCD properly... the behaviours have to be problematic, distressing and take up more than an hour per day. One can exhibit behaviours as a child but without any active phases as an adult the diagnosis would not apply.

a person can have ocd-tendencies and traits, and a person can be obsessive-compulsive in certain ways, both without being full-fledged OCD

peace
