I was wondering, does anyone here ever suffer from religious obsessions? I am constantly worried that I am am being possessed by the devil. I worry that I am a sinner and that Satan is controlling things in my life. Can anyone relate?

Yes.
I used to be obsessed with the idea that I had evil in me, and was a demon/devil. (this is still in place, but more under control, since the idea is probably ludicrous... probably... maybe... I think...) I always feel like I need to repent for my sins, thus have gone throughout life trying to help people. I constantly feel guilt. I think I used to self-harm, in part, as a way of repenting, but it was a few other things, too. I used to be relatively obsessed with a cross necklace I had, and when it broke.. so did my faith began to shatter.. it was symbolic to me. (I was about 16 when I lost my "faith" - now 26)

I'm agnostic, but I used to be Christian, and still have "worries" regarding that. For instance, I worry, if all that stuff is real (whichever "stuff" you believe), what if I say the wrong thing and the Devil or a demon is able to possess me, or appear before me, or hurt me, or anything like that? I watch horror movies, and I love them, but the ones that are scariest to me are the ones I think maybe could happen, like ghosts and possession. I'm not convinced one way or the other on religion, but I do still have religious obsessions. I used to have to pray a certain way. I still do, but I'm better than I used to be. I don't know if there's anyone out there who watches over us and loves us, but I hope so. Yet, if there is, the reality is pretty scary, and if there isn't, that's pretty scary, too.

I know exactly what you are talking about. I have had the same time thoughts over the last few months. At first I was extremely terrified because I actually believed it was going to happen. I thought surely that I was a horrible person and God was so upset with me.
I still have horrible thoughts (don't really want to mention), but I feel I have a little more control over the anxiety they cause me. What worked for me was just thinking about the thought for what it really is, and not focus on the emotions they cause. I know it's a lot easier than it sounds, and I myself am still struggling, but it does get better. Some days are great, other days not so much. I'm not sure about your religious beliefs, but I still believe in God and psalms has helped me tremendously! I wish you the best and I know it will get better for you. It will take work but it is possible! |
