Sometimes it's as though this OCD thing plays games/tricks on me , for example my wife has two dogs and when either one of us goes out we put up a gate in the living room to keep them contained in one room and prevent them from roaming around the house and there will be times I know I put the gate up before I walk out the door but I have this overwhelming need to check it at least 2-3 times before i'm satisfied it's up, I don't understand why it is this way ,i'm a pretty bright guy and I don't miss much , another example I own a car with a remote start and alarm and when I park I feel the need to chirp it at least 2-3 times and this is wherever I go and if I think I didn't arm the car I go out to the parking lot and make sure I did...this is crazy now I know I armed the alarm yet I still have to arm it again several times and if I don't it causes me anxiety because I think I didn't ...does anyone have any idea why I may be doing this , aside from having OCD , any help or advice to stop this would be great , thank you

That's the thing with OCD. It's completely irrational. But, my T said that not everybody knows that their obsessions aren't rational. So, at least we got that going for us, right? So, I just started therapy, and I can tell you what we are doing. We are picking one thing a week to work on. Starting at the obsessions that make me the least anxious. Example was for week one, once I locked my door at night, I wasn't allowed to go check it again. Every time I had the impulse to go check, I would say "I know the door is locked because I remember locking it". It still makes me crazy anxious sometimes, but I am leaving it. I guess the more we feed our insecurity, the more it grows. So, hopefully over time, I will gain some real confidence. Because you know what? The door is locked every single morning when I get up

This is considered under the OCD thing. I use to check documents (I am in a contamination stage) for hours at a time to make sure I didn't miss anything. Even when doing this, I would still miss stuff. But, I just felt I needed to check it over just in case I spelt something wrong or did whatever. I do check locks when I'm changing a lot and I do press the lock button three times because the number 2 isn't good and 1 is not enough for me. Sigh . Anyways, if you are diagnosed with OCD, I suggest you go get therapy for this. I hope you find the help you need .

I'm in therapy actually for the last 3 years and she's a great help but I wanted to bring it here because I know we can help each other better then any therapist ever could...my psychiatrist is pretty damn good as well i'm hoping I can find a less stressful remedy in my issues / OCD because I know one things for sure if all of us threw our problems in the middle of a room i'd take mine back in a heartbeat as our issues are unique for sure ...you have been helpful , once I put the gate up that's it , it's up and i'm not going to touch it or look to see if it's up again unless I have a reason to go into that part of the house, all of this sounds so simple but I tend to blame it on myself whenever I do something that I know is part of my disorder or I question myself is it ( the disorder or me)

I just mean that it would considered COD and not something else. I'm sorry, I'm bad with words.

I have to click the lock button on my car three times. I've been doing it since I've been driving.

My new car has an electronic start though which gets activated by pressing the lock button three times and THEN the electronic start button. So now I'm always stressed out I'm going to accidentally hit that electronic start button, not realize it, walk away and then someone is gonna think I left my keys in it running and break my window - which I know is completely irrational because there is NO WAY I wouldn't realize I pushed that button on accident. And anyway, no one can actually steal my car when it's in that mode... no comfort in that fact.

I also think I might me pissing off the neighbors with the triple lock because it honks each time I push it. So when I do a lot of grocery shopping I lock the car in between trips to the house, so I might click it up to 15 times within 5 minutes. Every time I walk away, under my breath I whisper a little "sorry everyone", you know JUST IN CASE someone is listening and wants an apology.

I'm actually laughing hysterically as I type all this. It's absolutely ridiculous.
But truly it really sucks each time I gotta go through it.

That's really funny! I've got a black Malibu myself, 2010. It's a classy looking car - it's hard not to protect the heck out of it.

I do the checking thing too and it's just getting worse the older I get. It started with water faucets and the stove top. Now it includes light switches, fireplace switch, door lock, car lights, car door lock, toilet, my alarm clock, microwave... basically anything that you can activate and de-activate. I know it's based out of fear of fire, theft, being late, floods, etc. But it's maddening!
