I have a terrifying fear right now that a special upcoming moment will be ruined by anxiety or a brand new mental illness. Currently I had thoughts about dwelling on anxiety, but now I am terrified of getting sensorimotor OCD. I've had this fear slightly before as I was practicing mindfulness because I remembered a story of a guy who developed an obsession with his breathing after practicing mindfulness. But now I have had this fear again whilst practicing mindfulness and because there is a very special moment coming up this fear has now heightened. For now I am just having obsessions that I'll get it, but what if those fears actually turn into sensorimotor OCD!?

Overthinking is the central issue when it comes to OCD. Can you focus on your tendency to overthink (which is caused by anxiety) and work on treating that, rather than focusing on getting sensorimotor OCD?

It definitely can happen. A new skill or event can trigger new OCD symptoms. When I began gardening, I became obsessed with my garden to the point of counting the number of plants. I even measured to make sure they were equally spaced apart. I would do this 50 times a day. I had to give up gardening.
![]() The best thing to do is to be ok with everything not having to be perfect or exact. Something I still struggle with today. |
