I remember being scared when I first came here. The first post that I made was in support of another poster. When new people come here, I think if you will offer support, as well as asking for it, you'll make friends easily........at least it worked for me. shy posters shy posters shy posters shy posters shy posters shy posters

Yes, I found chat as being the best place to make friends quickly too.

I can't get into chat, for some reason I can't download Java and I don't know what else to do. My home computer is rather primitive, albeit, a few years old.

But about this point, I found it best at first to find a nich where I fit in, bp forum for me. And I posted there as I felt comfortable or moved to do so. But then I found myself wanting to expand beyond that forum once I got the hang of things and I found out how nice and accepting ppl here are. I should also state that I watched from the sidelines anonymously for months before I ever became a member, so most ppl I already knew a great deal about. That made the transition much easier for me.

That's why you'd make such an excellent nurse Pat.

Me, I have a hard time offering support if it's a forum that I don't have that diagnosis. I'm afraid of the "how could YOU possibly understand what we're going through" backlash. shy posters

Pat, you seem like an amazing person

Wi_fighter

Sometimes I feel silly offering advice or comfort to people with the SAME diagnosis as me. I don't want to risk sounding banal or seem like I'm brushing off people's suffering too easily. On the other hand, I do have experience with this stuff and it would be criminal not to share it, even it doesn't apply directly to what other folks are going through.

That's the idea Feynman. You offer up what you know and if the person doesn't like it or it didn't work for them, then no harm and no foul. But it feels great when you help someone out.

Feyn,

If you never take that leap, how do you know if your advice can be useful to someone?

I came here looking for solace in other individuals that face a lot of what I face everyday, and I think without going to chat or taking that leap to post, I wouldn't have made the friends I have made so far.

You're very attentive to post this and help others by your example of how you went about it. I'd have to review my posts to figure out how I stumbled out of my shell of hiding before wading in and posting beyond my little hidey hole of comfort. It is scary to reach out but so wonderful the ability to connect for at least a moment to know we are not alone in our paths to better mental health.

Now tell them the truth about how we all stormed the boards with ethel and her waxing cousin shy posters (that's a post for real folks that is a hoot if you ever need a non sequitur story with amazing authors--us! lol)

Ask Pat. She'll lead the way.....onward ethel!!
