(Mods - move it if you need.)

I had some training today with the most wonderful Doctor. It was a training course on 'Managing Personal Safety.'

It was particularly good because the Doctor demonstrated anger, aggression and violence very well. Several times she lept out of her seat and started swearing and shouting just like anyone would in the midst of losing control of their anger.

This got me thinking, I can't remember the last time I let off steam like that. I'm very calm and collected even under the most stressful situations. The Doctor certainly seemed to be enjoying acting the part of the aggressor and I remember thinking gosh I'd love to just let it all out like that!

Any tips on letting it all out? lololol!

1. Scream into pillows and punch them.
2. Go to a secluded area and scream at the top of your lungs.
3. Tack your least favorite person on a dart board and let them have it.
4. Write a hate letter and then rip it to shreds.
5. Take karate and do the sparring classes.
5. Buy those foam swords at the dollar store and have a sword fight.
6. Go for a ride on those carnival bumper cars and pretend you have road rage.
7. If you have the chance to do that group again, tell the doc that you want to be the nasty person next time.

I think it's good to have an outlet for releasing a persons anger and frustrations. Come on Pegasus - let me hear you scream and swear.

Actually last time I swore here at PC it got deleted by a mod!

Thanks for your suggestions, I particularly like the foam sword idea, do you fancy a fight?

The course wasn't supposed to be about letting off steam but managing other peoples anger. But it didn't half look fun!

Throwing ice cubes into the shower makes lots of noise. Very satisfying.

Pegs...

Two words.....Sail Plates!!

My friend makes plates, as in dishes, out of sugar. Not sure how, but I think it's similar to making peanut brittle. She makes them for her friends and family. What you do is you take these sugar plates and you find a safe place like an alley, or even your driveway, and you take them and you chuck them at the ground or a wall as hard as you can.

They sound like and shatter like broken glass. You can scream while your doing it if you want to. It is relatively safe as long as you are not throwing them around others, but I would recommend wearing safety glasses.

Because it's sugar, it is non-toxic and if you can't clean it up it will desolve with the weather.

Just an idea....

I just found out that the Psychologist I see is sparring. Um! I asked what happened to his eye and that is how I found out. I was kind of suprised but secretly very glad. I hope my bones aren't too brittle before I get to try it (not with him necessarily but you know with someone).

I get the ax from the basement, go to the back of the yard where it's "all mine" and I swing that ax into a felled tree over and over again. Chips fly and I work up a sweat until I am totally worn out.

It is powerful, exhilarating and requires being fully present. Not for everyone...but I like it, even if it does make my pdoc cringe.

I honestly used to chop wood. Used to have a wood burning fireplace and chopping wood was a great way to work off energy. Just had to remember that I had a weapon in my hands and had to be accurate. I also had a bow and used to target practice in my back yard with a few bales of hay. Had many an old boyfriend or a university professor drawn on pieces of butcher paper stuck up on the hay.

Great thread Pegasus!! I don't let my anger out well either and feel that many of these ideas would do me a world of wonder!! Bet your work never thought a group of people would have such a good discussion about doing just the thing they were teaching you to not do.hehehe

One thing I learnt on the course....

If someone is coming at me with an axe... run like hell!

I have found listening to good ol' Guns N' Roses and Red Hot Chili Peppers is doing it for me! Oh yeah!

I have this ability of saying ludicrous things with an absolute poker face, no expression, or as they say in psychological circles, a completely flat affect.

I once told a therapist in group that I was not the typical woman. When I get upset, instead of crying, I often go outside and sit on the curb and shoot at cars.

They almost called for the great big strong guys with the coats. I had to do a lot of convincing very quickly that I was only joking.

Say your anger out loud. You can also write about it. OR you can do what I do, confront who you are mad at. A lot of people don't like doing that. I do, and it works.

When I'm angry, I throw stuff. Probaby not the best way, but it works . Have you ever tried throwing cotton balls and tissues? Throw them as hard as you can, it dissolves the anger because after a while it gets kind of funny when you can't throw them more than a few feet. Just a suggestion...

I have a tendency to throw my clothes all around the room, dump things out... make a mess out of everything... and then clean it back up to the way it was when I'm done. At least I don't break anything....

When I get really angry, I start crying. Can't help myself. I also bang doors and swear like a sailor!!

Crying isn't a sign of weakness. It's a sign of having tried too hard to be strong for too long.

When I want to vent some of my frustrations I just put on my mp3 player as loud as it will go and dance around my room. lol, I'm not very good at it, but it uses some of the excess energy and I always feel better afterwards.
