I start a new Nursing job tomorrow. It's a great thing really, I need to have more income than the unemployment. I just can't get by on it.

This job is not permanent. It is another 13 week contract, but again....my agency manager says that this employer is looking to hire people and I may have the possibility of getting hired. (He's said this the last three jobs)

I'm scared because I am anxious I'm going to screw things up like I usually do. I have such strong values on how people deserve to be treated and I stand up for what I believe in so much, that some managers don't like it. They think I cause to much trouble and I don't bend over often enough for them.

I'm really going to try to not be so headstrong and present a softer side of myself. I'm not mean, and I am not aggressive. I just don't put up with any crap and I speak my mind.

Anyway....as with any new job, I'm also scared cause it's new and I only get one day of general orientation to get to know the company policies and such.

Parts of me don't want to go. They want to just stay home and not get out of bed. If we don't go...we can't screw anything up. But I need an income....and I need to get my life back on track. I haven't had secure employment since November of 2008. I can't go through this much longer without getting back on my feet.

I'm just scared as hell.

Anyway...just needed to get that out before going to bed.

I'm going to go to bed thinking...."I'm going to have a great day at work!!", and I'm going to repeat that to myself until I fall asleep.

I too have too strong a sense of expectations from others sometimes and I really hate starting a new job too. But I have learned to try to chose my battles. I think to myself, "Is this really a battle I can win." Sadly often times I say no. Most people are satisfied with the status quo and don't want to get involved or change. I do what I can in my own way to either show by example or let it go if I can. It's very hard to do though.

But to close good luck with the new job!

I am sure you are a great nurse, just be you. There is nothing wrong in being a strong advocate for your patients. I'm very excited for you. You can do this!

Since this is only for 12 weeks, try not to worry. I'm sure you'll do great. I'm like you, standing up for what I believe in, but since you won't be there for years, perhaps you can tame that inner lion a little. Let us know how the first day goes and best of luck ((Elysium))

I have this fear and anxiety too when starting a new contract. My favourite is when there is a place nearby to walk and then sit and have a quiet cup of tea before starting each day, maybe read my book. Hope you can use some rewards and have fun.

Wow...Thanks everyone!!

I am thrilled to say that I had an excellent day at work today. My new co-workers are very nice and I seem to fit right in. I know nothing is perfect so I'm expecting little bumps along my way, but I had a great start. And...I didn't screw anything up!!

On a more positive note, I was introduced to the hiring manager and let them know that I was interested in permanent employment with the company after my contract was up. He said he was hiring now and asked me to fill out an application and bring in my resume. Because I've already started my contract, the hospital may have to buy me out of the contract if they want to hire me before it's up. Or, I can finish the contract and then come on after the next 12 weeks. Either way, I'd be fine with it.

The worst part about my whole day was that my feet hurt soooo bad because I haven't done a 12 hour shift in over 4 months. I really have no room to complain.

It was very nice to log in here though and see everyone's post of support. I really appreciate all the positive thoughts and mojo you all sent my way. It obviously helped me have a great day.

Thanks so much you all!!

A "more positive" note on top of a "great start!" - super! May you go from strength to strength (your feet especially)

I'm really glad it went well. And I really hope you get hired on permanently.

And I hope your feet feel better.

Good for you (and your sore feet too) ! I know the dread feeling of beginning a new job. You did it! It sounds like a nice place to work and I think they're lucky to have you.

Uuuhhh....I regret to inform you all that this place is hell!!

I had such a difficult day today, and I hated it. Wednesday, when I was shadowing another nurse and we had a light patient load, it was fine, but today was awful. I didn't get a second day of orientation. They gave me a full team of patients....well, I posted about it already so I won't get into it here again.

I'm sorry I let everyone down. I just can't even make myself pretend that I could tolerate this place for even one more day. I feel I let myself down too...but at the same time, this place was rotten. I asked several employees if this was just a really bad day, and they said "No, this is just a really normal day. It's always like this."

OMG!!! Something's got to give!!
