... lately it's making me more mad than anything... all the opportunities squandered. Stolen revolutions. Lost ideals and hopes. Masses of cynical people and their even more cynical politicans. Even those who should care, don't really care anymore... mostly out of survival instinct. We were hoping for the end of the history... oh, the joke was on us.

I am really worried when I try to look into the future. Things seem to be falling appart. History has gotten too rapid. Maybe there is something about the 2012 prophecy... end of the era. Civilization, whatever. It seems that things cannot go back to when they were before this mess (especially financial crisis) started... and what than?

I feel pretty old today... i've seen the history made... and at the moment... I don't like it anymore. It's too weird, unpredictable.

I know how you feel. I don't know how old you are, I am 34, and yet I see the changes and am afraid of what the future is going to hold when I turn 60 or 70. Things are going down hill fast in my opinion. I wish there was a magic solution

I am 26. I should say i am from the ex-Eastern bloc... we went through very turbulent 20 years now... and when things should be settling down... here goes another trouble.

Hard to be constanly re-adjusting to the world.

(((VenusHalley))) I'm in my fifties. My heart goes out to your generation. I'm actually looking forward to passing that 2012 mark. Maybe then people will get their heads out of the clouds or out of the sand and get back to caring for this world and those who inhabit this world.

It appears to me, generation after generation, history keeps repeating itself. But we never learned from our mistakes, we only figured out how to sweep them under the rug. The birth of technology has made our world not only global, but transparent - we can no longer hide behind closed doors because we all live in glass houses.

I hope you and your generation have the tools you'll need to make this world inhabitable for all of you. On behalf of my own generation, I'm sorry for making such a mess. As the late Leslie Nielsen (RIP) would say .....

Thanks for this!

venus i couldn't agree more. these are frightening times..even other countries are screwed up too, UK, etc. i've stopped following the news because it is so depressing and worrisome. i commented to my son we need a revolution to set things straight but that may not help either. so many ppl feel as we do but nobody is listening to us. worse yet they don't seem to care...washington, the whole lot of them.
i worry a lot for my grandchildren and the world we are creating now they will inherit. i have no hopes of things improving.
the 2012 prophesy may be true.

I don't find it depressing personally (I, unfortunatly, don't need the news for that) but scary, ye. The world has always been a scary place, though.

I do hear what you are saying, and I agree in many ways. The truth is, even tomorrow is not a certainty.

I am not one of those "glass full" positive kind of hopeful people. However, I really like that saying about living today like it was your last day on Earth. I think we all might be happier if we could do this. Obviously , it might not be possible to do everything you would actually do.. but hey- try a few things you CAN do.

Tell someone you love them, take a hot bath, buy something you like. Do something nice for someone else..Forgive yourself just for today. Then get up tomorrow, and repeat

And most importantly....

TURN OFF THE NEWS!!!! Seriously!!! And delete all of your news bookmarks! If something happens that you REALLY need to know.. it will come and find you!!
Thanks for this!

madis... we had revolution here... and somehow it did not turn out the way we hoped. It's not the bad, we are well off now... we had great times... but I do fear the future.

Hayward... I study International Relations, so turning off the news is not an option.

venus, when did we have a revolution here recently? did i miss that cause i avoid the news chatter? i don't mean an election if that is what u're referring to, idk. i mean an uprising from the ground up! this includes the intellectuals and the common people. the 60's showed what a political revolution can do re the vietnam war. it changed the whole attitude of that war and forced change in our foreign policy there. i feel a lot of ppl are apathetic and are being pulled around by the nose instead of being aware of what is going on in our government.

21 years ago, actually. Which is nothing compared to history.

And recently we had little shake up of the political scene... but it seems that it was change in name only.

I am talking about Czech Republic. We went through a lot during past two decades.

VenusHalley, I just wanted to thank you for your post, don't know if you even read this thread anymore, I just happened to sign in now and saw it, and started laughing almost hysterically. I've been through the same experience, it's hard to explain to people who haven't been through it, what it does to your sense of self, sense of the world, when what was up is suddenly down, and you feel like you helped to bring it down, because you were convinced it was right and righteous. Time's gone by, and the world seems to have gotten crazier, more cruel, much less hopeful. I, for one, feel like I am living a third or a fourth life. You're right, extreme social turmoil made us (or me, at least) hypersensitive to news, politics, when other people can just say "ok, that's very sad" and stay emotionally uninvolved...

That's very true, Planetjanka.

I sometimes feel responsible... after all I buy goods manufactured in China, I often vote for lesser of two evils and our government endorses the superpowers, enabling them to act they way they do. For me it's not a paranoia or anything sinnister... it's a citizenship responsibility. I am "using" the world, I should care for at least a little bit. For me ignorance is not an option.
