Sept,
No problem. ![]() It's this thing, and not your fault, that is a prime example of what irks me, the media seems to only throw attention to the person's mental disorder(s), rather it be bipolar, schizophrenia, ptsd. etc. It would be nice if the media devoted air time to more documentarys, educational stuff on mental disorders, break through the public's ignorance and show it's not all black and white, etc. I guess the title of this thread may have triggered me, and I apologize to all if I came across as being offended and/or defensive about disorders. My feeling about the incident, doesn't say what happened was okay, I am happy security was there. Me, not being there, can't tell if it was necessary to kill the man. I kind of feel shooting at non vital area, bringing him down, then cuff him. But, again, I was not there so I do not know if there was such option. It's ashame, his wife even considered having him fly while not on his meds., there are some things I wonder about in that relationship. Main thing is that the rest of the passengers were not injured, maybe shaken up a bit. Take it easy, Roe (((((((((((( SeptemberMorn ))))))))))))

I'm sorry if you and anyone else was triggered... I did put the icon on the original thread which was quickly forgotten, I guess... and the subject line IS the subject... and why it's relevant to the site here imo (((DE)))) ((((others))))
BTW local news here (Miami area) IS educating the public about the disorder, interviews with psychiatrists, etc. Another item to note, remember, the SKY marshalls are not in uniform... but civilian dress, MORE than blending into the background. How would YOU feel if someone drew down on you in a hawaiian shirt, no matter what your mood? IMO we EACH need to think about this.. and how "there but for the grace of God go I." No, I'm not dealing with bipolar disorder (though my ignorant sister just told my mother's new doctor that I am!!!! gggrrrrr another story) but with PTSD I do become triggered, I do fade, dissociate, etc especially when overwhelmed. Usually, I spring into action (as is my training in counter terrorism) but... what if I didn't? What kind of things can I do to try and prevent something like this from ever happening to/with me? And, how can you keep yourself safer when travelling? Not just space ships, but earthbound vehicles too!

Maybe it was this: Suicide by Cop

I would personally hope that ANY stereotyping would be reconsidered, especially on a site where so many members are at the bad end of it. Stereotyping various classifications of workers, and then proclaiming it wasn't stereotyping is still offensive to some, I think.
The Suicide by Cop info was good; one could wonder if, after having the argument with his wife, that he felt it's all worthless and he just wanted to die and that triggered his proclamation that he had a bomb, almost assuring his demise? Even if this wasn't his intent (as did he even realize this?) it's a tough call to blame the marshalls... I've known hundreds of law enforcement officers in all branches from military, local, state and federal positions, who in all their years had never shot and killed anyone. Their first priority is usually PUBLIC SAFETY, isn't it? Anyway, I hope it's still that way. We need to feel safe around officers of the law... we need to feel safe in public places.. knowing there are others watching out for us (even if they aren't in uniform) imo. If the officers were only thinking of themselves, they could have run the other way. Because of their quick actions, the 190 other passengers and crew are safe. They made a tough call. As I said, I wish they had made the call sooner.. in the waiting area.. and perhaps prevented it from escalating... UNLESS he was fine there...and the argument began in the jetway? Sigh. Has anyone heard anything decisive as to WHY he was off his meds? IMO that's an important point for us here. Weekly we seem to be helping other members figure out how to, or encouraging them to continue to, take their medications! It's really important, isn't it?

Ok.. still another viewpoint.. this one is religious, so if that offends you, stop reading?
The couple was returning from a mission trip. Most of us know how stressful travelling is in the first place... and those of us with psychological and/or physical disabilities find it unbelievably stressful! Also, add that this was an international trip, they were flying, so add in the lack of movement, dehydration.. all key factors that we have to watch for and ward off negative aspects... THEN add... the reason for the trip..and what -or who- was behind it. You know, I am a Christian. I am still amazed at the things other religious people say to me or about others who are disabled... to "just" rely upon God. I wonder if this man and his wife were somehow "pressured" to just rely upon God, that everything would be fine with faith... even though they knew it would be too tough? I often have someone ask me to do something I know I cannot. Often it doesn't even take soliciting the higher mind of God for His opinion... I mean, my own feeble earthly brain can figure out plenty! Sometiimes they just don't "get it." Well, in that case it takes a strong mind and will to say , "No. I cannot do that." IMO God made this body to respond to things a certain way, to break down for certain reasons, to work or not depending upon HIS originating design.. and sometimes it means STOP! What if... this couple KNEW the trip was not a good idea but they succumbed to well wishers who egged them into it.. plus add the natural desire to serve God... Anyway, I wonder if there will be Christians who will "answer" for this... it won't be a Merry Christmas for many... Please remember to also pray for the 190 other passengers and crew who have been traumatized...and may never be the same again. It shows you have to draw the line somewhere.. always... the line has to be drawn somewhere! Learning to draw it so that you are safe, so that you do a good job of self-care... that's important imo.

thank you... As I suspected, this passenger had created upset with other passengers prior to the boarding. Paid personnel at the airport were remiss in preventing this tragic outcome.
