If you've been watching the news, you'll know the authorities reported they rescued our trapped coal miners. Now we know that 12 of the 13 died. Please pray for the families and community and all of our state. We are a caring community here. My grandfather was killed coming out of the mine to go home on his very last day of work. The anquish those poor people must be feeling.....

Oh no. How awful for everyone in that community. My heart just goes out to them. Thank God for the one survivor, a miracle, I'm sure. But what a horrible tragedy. I can't imagine the strength it must take to work everyday in a job which can be so dangerous.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all of those, that this horrible tragedy has affected, it is all so very sad. West Virginia Tragedy
The misinformation that was given is also very sad, to think those that had hope, clung on to it and then once again were robbed of it by the grim discovery, the reality of this horrible event.
My heart goes out to the families and friends.

I dreamt of hearses and funerals last night, awoke knowing what the news probably was. Coal mine tragedies especially get to me for some reason. My prayers and best wishes go to the families and community, the state, and to you and yours also Jan.

I cannot fathom the anguish and pain these people must be going through. The jerkey emotional rollercoaster of hearing that 'congratulations, your families are alive!' to 'whoops we messed up, they arent'. Man. You think these people would do a double check before making such an announcement. My heart goes out to those families.

This is just horrific! I'm feeling so terrible about all the workers, their families, and everyone involved. Sending prayers to all the families and workers.

This was so horrible ! I cannot understand at all how they even thought the miners had survived, and within 20 minutes realized the information was wrong. My thoughts and prayers are with all the families, and friends in the community !

It was a miscommunication. Someone heard a fraction of something and/or someone misspoke. Then the cell phone calls began. No one in an official capacity ever made a statement to the families or to the media. Everything the families learned was from one or several cell phone calls. Cell phone reception in that area is shoddy at best - then put people below ground, it's awful.

Mine officials also say that they weren't able to confirm what had exactly happened (or who exactly was still alive) until 2:30...they spoke to the families at 2:40.

We could all point fingers all day. The fact remains 12 men died. I hope the media remembers that and doesn't turn this into a lynching of the company (don't get me wrong, they have plenty to answer for).

I keep reminding myself that there is still one miracle out there. It could have been worse. May the families of the miners find peace and may the community be able to take care of those who have lost someone they loved.

Sadly,
1day

I had seen the news "alert" when they said they found the first "body."

This just shows how -in general- the news media runs with "FIRST get a story, whether it's true or not." If it isn't that, then maybe it's from a dumbing down of media, not knowing enough English words to tell an accurate story (and maybe not believing that semantics are important at all?)

I wonder if the report of the disaster officials knowing for 3 hours without wanting to correct it, is also so true?

Do I hear lawyer's doors?

How sad. How truly sad.

Thank you, all of you, for your good wishes, thoughts and prayers. Please keep it up. That tiny community has 12 funerals to go through now. Let there be peace, not fighting.

Jan, It's hitting home here since I live in Terry, right near Beckley. The community is greatly affected by this tragedy. What gets me most was these people were told that their loved ones survived and then their miracle was taken from them a moment later. I couldn't imagen their pain.
I'll be praying for them.
