It's in the trial stage now at one facility..I believe in new York..if memory serves. This arm band or wrist band delivers quite a whopper of a shock. One reporter was shown getting shocked by one. She said it was like getting stung by several bees at a time. My worry: is this wise to adopt as a method of stopping children from acting out in school? Or is this a form of abuse? The thing is: the same shock is given to a 5 yr old that is given to a 16 year old. There isen't even a measurement system in place. Opinions, please. Elec. shock therapy 4 kids who act out.

It's abuse! They're children! They're not adults with mental problems with the knowlege about ECT and it doesn't sound like they're given a chance to even say if they want it or not!

That's just cruel, IMO!

My father underwent ECT a year ago for severe PTSD in a VA hospital and I feel terrible about it. He was desperate to get my mother to come back to him so he went through with it. I would have been there, but he told me that he hated me earlier that day, so I didn't go see him. I felt awful, even though he was so mean and scary, I should have been there. What a nightmare! Even though adults are consenting, it is abuse because it robs you of memories, good and bad. No way I'd let my child go through that

The shock is delivered by remote control. Looks like a little clicker. I wanted to correct that this is going on in a facility in Ct. But kids from as far as New York are arriving at the center for the therapy.

New York is seeking to actually Ban the use of this.Wise choice, IMO.

While the American Psychiatric Association has no policy regarding the use of mild shock for behavior modification, individual experts say they are surprised at the methods in place at Rotenberg. Edward Carr, a Stony Brook University psychology professor who specializes in autism and mental retardation, called the therapy "primitive."

To say the Very Least!! Opinions, please. Elec. shock therapy 4 kids who act out.

When I was in a mental hospital almost three yrs ago, there was a woman there that had gotten shock treatments for depression. IMO, they may as well have given her a frontal lobotomy!!!

I know it's not the same as what these kids are getting, but like the article says; it reminds you of "One Flew Over the Coocoo's Nest"!!

I haven't found much. I know many ppl use the rubber band on their wrist to help correct their own behavior... but these seem to be ppl who haven't learned self control. IDK...it's restricted to this one place it seems... I just don't know what to think yet.

Not from the shock itself...as I think that is neglible.((Trying to find out.)) ( Kind of like testing a 9v with your tongue Opinions, please. Elec. shock therapy 4 kids who act out. ?) If they aren't able to come up with "proper" behavior on their own... who decides on which aversion therapy is acceptable and which isn't?
