My daughter is on disability, because she is legally blind. I just got a call from her caseworker saying that Abby's (my daughter) file has been lost, and we have to REAPPLY AGAIN. This makes the second time this has happened. I called and asked to talk to someone else that might be able to tell me a little more about it all. Get this.... They had my 4 year old daughter listed as a 30 year old drug addict with arthritis!!!!! Can you believe THAT!!! So, they are canceling her disability check until I come and apply again. AND it's THEIR fault!!!! Not mine! Good GRIEF! This is SO frustrating... I could SCREAM! ARRGGGHHH!!!! So MAD I could SCREAM!!!

Oh - I don't blame you!!!! How absolutely maddening!!! It took me almost two years to get my new Identification book (social security) when I got re-married. But that is nothing compared to what you have to deal with.

I am so sorry!!!! How frustrating!!!!

SCREAM AWAY GURL!!!!!
For I hear you.... my daughter (God rest her Soul) was on SSI for 10 years and we were constantly having problems with the local office. The best advice I can give you is to go and reapply ASAP!!! - so that your daughter does not miss out on any well needed money or medical assistance..... SORRY for your difficulties, but this is how our good old system works - Phooie Spit Spit.

OH I feel for you. I had to apply for disability at my college and am encourtering similar conditions. If I was you I would get tangible examples of how they are not doing their jobs, and then bring it to a higher force. ..but that's what i would do...so mabye not for you..dunno

Meanwhile keep screaming...

WE ALL FEEL FOR YOU AND HOPE THINGS GET BETTER

Back in december 1999 I contacted my local SSI/SSDI (Social Security Insurance/ Social Security Disability Insurance) because of the Y2K scares going on and the possibility of their office losing the files. I was told that there is more than 1 file - there is the computer file, the paper file at my branch office and the file with my state branch office and one with the National branch. SSI/SSDI is nation wide. they do this as a protocal against all kinds of things - fire, flood, earthquakes, Y2K or even because the person moves from state to state so that there are no missing files and problems if the computers all go down, lost files, nature emergencies or the person moves. Once a person is on Disability all they need to do is take their grant award letter they get in the mail every January to their branch office and the branch office can automatically retrieve files from the other locations. Also it is the Federal branch that issues the federal funds the checks will not stop because of a lost file.

Once a person is on SSDI there are only two reasons that they must completely reapply and that is if the person has been incarcerated (inmates are not allowed to recieve welfare grants and SSI/SSDI grants during their "stay" in prison. and they don't ALWAYS have to reapply, in some cases just notifying the caseworker the person is no longer in prison and once that is varified the checks, foodstamps and medical coverage begins again,

The other way is if the person has been deemed that they no longer require the services of SSI/SSDI. Then the person must appeal

I have moved from state to state clear accross the country three times and have not had to reapply, one of my district offices got flooded from being close to a river and all their files were lost but my checks did not stop and that local agency was able to retrieve my files from the other branches.

I do go through SSDI recerts every 5 years, but this is not to completely reapply. it is basically updating the file for any changes in income and so on.

Call the 1-800 number on your grant award letter you were automatically sent in January by the federal national branch office and they can help you.

If you cannot find the grant award letter the 1-800 number is listed in the phone book.

I am so sorry Jenn. This is outrageous. I understand your frustration and your anger is definitly justified.

I would file a grievance and outline how your daughters case is being handled. Get in writing.

Oh, Jenn!!! I'm screaming right along with you!!! So MAD I could SCREAM!!!

Sweety, don't you have a copy of that file for yourself? If you don't, this time make a copy for yourself with EVERYTHING in it including THEIR paperwork!

Make sure you write somewhere in that file that this is the second time it has happened due to THEIR INCOMPETENCY! Fight them every step of the way! Keep bringing THEIR INCOMPETENCY up! Make them push it through! Appeal this as loudly and as often as you can!

So MAD I could SCREAM!!! So MAD I could SCREAM!!! So MAD I could SCREAM!!!

Hi, you know as I read this thread and all it occurred to me to ask you if she is on a medical disability which gives her state health insurance, or medicaid, or if you are referring to SSA. If it's medical and they have her file confused with someone elses, I would suggest that you call and speak with an agency director. I had clients who kept having this happen and their benefits getting messed up and then the files were locked for supervisors only. I sent 5 reviews once and then they finally get me to a super who told me about the locked file thing. If this is SSA, our friend here is correct. They can't stop giving you the benefits unless they inform you in writing and the entire file system theoretically can't be "lost".

If you have to do a review of paperwork once a year for your daughter for the medical stuff I think that is pretty normal. Good luck.

I'm sorry incompetency has reached your affairs. I would certainly hope you already knew to make/keep copies of everything anytime you deal with an issue such as this. If not, it will be tougher, but you've learned a good lesson that I'm sure you will use again and again (unfortunately.)

Please don't take their incompetence personally. It happens...more than you want to know. Nothing you're allowing your emotions to tell you is good for you... breathe, and continue. Good thing your child has you to advocate for her!

I know this awful for you, Jenn--this is why the phrases "State of Tennessee" and "Competent Bureaucracy" are allowed in the same sentence!

Sorry to hear of your problems; you have more than your share!

Hugs,
DJ
