Okay, I'm typing up this mini-essay for two specific reasons, I want to know what is wrong with me, and what causes it.

I'm a 18 year old male, and I've been plagued with some type of mental issue. Ill keep this as short as possible, I spent two months locked in my room, I spoke to noone. I said maybe 20 words to my family during that time, and I only left my room if i had to use the bathroom, I ate only 10 days out of the two months i spent in my room and I did almost nothing the entire time in there, I literally did absolutely nothing. I started reading a book but couldn't keep myself interested, I spent one entire day listening to my entire music library, and every other day I was either just laying in bed or lost in thought. (cant even remember what i might have been thinking about) Now its been about a week and other than the fact that I can barely get enough sleep, I feel fine. I don't think that it was any kind of depression because nothing happened that would have caused me to become depressed. It was as if one day someone turned me off. Now I feel completely normal.. but i still feel like somethings wrong, in fact i know it, I barely eat and i dont get nearly as much sleep as i should. I'm also scared that something like this may happen again because it's happened before, just not this long and as intense.

Any answers?

You can have depression without something negative happening in your life. Depression is a brain disorder, meaning the chemicals aren't balanced, and don't travel through the synapses properly to be most effective. It's called clinical depression. You can be depressed without feeling sad and crying. One symptom is loss of motivation, and loss of interest in life or past hobbies, and low energy and appetite.

unfortunately we cant give you the answers you are looking for, only a treatment provider ie a medical doctor, psychiatrist or therapist can diagnose your problem...we are not allowed to diagnose fellow members here on psych central..

that said if you google what you wrote you will find millions upon millions of medical and mental health reasons along with many normal reasons for your symptoms..which is probably why we are not allowed to diagnose fellow members here...we could start out intending to do good by diagnosing you but end up getting the diagnosis wrong..

my suggestion is contact your treatment providers in your local area. they can diagnose your problem for you and treat you for it.
Thanks for this!

You being so young I wouldn't even want to consider diagnosing you with anything. I would more worried about your daily activities. Going by your post your not doing much which would not help with anyone's mood. Where are your freinds? what about work? and are your parents even concerned about you isolating yourself away from society for lengthy periods of time.

I agree with the above. It sounds like it could be depression perhaps combined with social phobia. Please see a counselor AS SOON AS POSSIBLE before this gets worse. It is VERY unhealthy to skip meals and to lie in bed all day.

Not only are we not allowed to diagnose mood disorders, but we are also not qualified to do so.....

Hello bqp.....Sorry you've had some hard times. Sounds like things have been pretty confusing. Diagnosis of mood disorders, etc. is a very complicated issue, and should be left to experts in these matters.....probably beginning with a physician, who can formulate a treatment plan if need be, possibly to include talk therapy and ~or other options. While what you express may sound like this, or sound like that to people here, asking for answers from fellow posters, despite the fact that we care, is a risky thing to do, IF you are substituting their ideas for a medical diagnosis. Best wishes and I hope you will feel better asap....

I would make an appointment with your medical doctor, have some blood/urine tests to rule out any physical issues and tell him what you wrote here, see what he says and if he can recommend the next step you could take.

Maybe you misunderstood, I get plenty of social activity and i have a few friends. I'm pretty normal, what worries me is that i just random go from being a normal person than i completely shut down out of the blue. Like i said this type of thing has happened before and although i was recommended to get screen mentally i've been kind of in denial til recently

But seeing how i would have to actually go through mental health programs to get answers kind of worries me. I would hate to get stigmatized by having my name tied to a mental health condition, is there anyway I can be diagnosed anonymously. If not, I still want to thank you people for at least trying.

Your fears are correct. You will be labelled with something, but what that something is no-one on the thread can say.

It could be as simply a medical condition e.g. not enough vitamins and minerals in your diet, a blood condition, etc. Although these conditions will be on your medical file, no-one would use this against you.

However, if it is a mental health condition this may cause a problem. But really this will depend on you. If you get help and your mental health condition improves with minimal intervention than nothing will come of it, But if you dont get help and your condition gets worse, then that could impact on you in a totally different way.

Forced treatment is never a good way to go.

Is it random or does it happen at a particular part of the year. Keep a journal and see if there is a pattern maybe there is a trigger

It doesn't sound like you are ready to deal with whatever motivated you to post here. Denial is a powerful force, but it will not protect you from the truth, if in fact you have a mood disorder. Good luck to you.....

quite honestly i think you are dealing with more then one issue. I get the same way and it's usually related to something i'm anxiety over or depressed about however the PC friends are correct to point you in the direction of a health care proffessional. I suggest going to see a Therapist, and a Psychiatrist and explain this to them.
