Back when I was in a lot of distress, I came across a book (can't remember which one...I had a library full of self-help books!) that described an exercise, a visualization, of creating your own special place...a residence in which you find comfort and peace. In the book, she described how you create the setting, the furnishings, the rooms, etc. For me, odd though it sounds, it's a cave room. I even see myself walking thru the woods to it. It's a path I follow, sometimes in the snow, with tree boughs drooping overhead heavy with snow, till I reach the entrance, which is a heavy door with a stoop outside. It's inviting, but I am the only one with a key. I enter the cave by a few steps up in the entryway inside (kind of like a foyer from which I step up two stone steps). Inside is a cavernous room with a comfy sofa in front of a big fireplace. The sofa has soft covers under which I can snuggle. There is an adjacent bedroom, but I tend to stay in the room with the fireplace. I like going there, to "my place." Do any others of you have such a place?

Aww this was a DBT techinique that i was recently told to do - it can be really effective. I envision a beautiful old stately house surrounded by woodland and lots of land, its a grey overcast afternoon and im sitting in a beautiful room with low light watching the rain begin to fall outside as i sip hot tea and read an old book. This is most certainly my favourite place as to me its comforting and a reminder of what i love most; big beautiful houses that ill never be able to afford and lovely english weather/countryside. Great thread thanks for posting

I haven't a "place" yet.

Instead, I am in the forest. Lots of pine trees, birds, deer. Soft, crunching sounds as I walk across a path, lightly covered with pine needles. A stream runs nearby. I can hear the water running across the rocks. I then get a peak of this river. It's wide, around 10 feet or so across. And no trees block the rays of sunshine from above.

Fish swim in the river ~ birds are nearby on trees overlooking the river. Robins, nuthatches, cardinals, osprey. Lots of life surrounding me in this clean and natural forest. It gives me a sense of safety and strength. I'm not afraid to be alone there. I do not worry about eating, cleaning, or sleeping. I am safe and I don't ever want to leave.
