Hi Gang:
Has anyone read the book "The Highly Sensitive Person" or know anything about this ... I don't know ... branch of pop psychology? Someone recently referrred me to the website below and it sounds very interesting. Just wondering if you have happened to read it and can say whether it's nonsense or has any pertinence.

Thanks,
LMo

We are ALL going to be a-ok!

I'd never heard of it before, LMo, but I went ahead and took the test. Just as I thought. I'm not "highly sensitive." When the TV is too loud, like it is now, I do wish I could escape to a silent, dark room, though. I'll be SO GLAD when hubby gets his hearing aids!!! "Highly Sensitive Person"? (si-i-i-i-gh!!) "Highly Sensitive Person"?

Weelllll, just took the self-test and, not surprisingly, came up 'highly sensitive'. This is probably recent and due to my anxiety/panic/agoraphobia. I didn't used to be as sensitive to/easily stressed by my physical environment as I am now, nor was I as likely to be 'overwhelmed' by the demand for multi-tasking or fast deadlines as I probably am now. Interesting...

Hi Peanut! Good to see you too! Haven't seen you much lately! Hope you're doing well and survived the holidays.

It IS interesting, although I guess probably not rocket science. I had a score of 7, which means I'm not highly sensitive, but I knew that already. My boyfriend would be off the charts, but I'm weaning myself from over-analyzing him. He hasn't said anything, but I'm starting to annoy myself with my obsession with his psychological states!

Anyway, if it's helpful, then great!

Well, I scored 21. It looks like it has apparent validity to me, for that trait. There are any number of traits that could be measured in a similar way. The thing to keep in mind I guess, is that this will probably fit a great many people, and refers (as the author states) to a normal trait. So if it is useful to you, great, but don't base your life around it.

WHEW! I'm glad you posted that, Wendy! I noticed this morning that my morning shows sounded too loud. I started to worry when I remembered that one of the reasons I don't watch The View is because all those broads are too chatty!!! "Highly Sensitive Person"? Regis and Kelly can get too loud and so can Wayne Brady, but I like them a lot more than I like the broads on The View. See? I don't even call them "ladies." LOL

OMG! I went to that site ... scored 25! well, guess that's the nature of the beast with PTSD... one of the items probably would have been also, except I can't taste or smell, and I don't enjoy anything. Thanks for the info though...

I got a 19...but mostly because I am physically very sensitive...like noises and lights and stuff really affect me a lot.

I have read other things about oversensitivity in children, so this women is not talking nonsense. Whether her books are helpful or not, though, is hard to say. I'm not sure there is much to be done about physical oversentivity...I mean, maybe she gives advice on how to deal with it, but if your nervous system is wired to react strongly to stimuli, it doesn't seem like you can change that.

Anyway, it looks like an interesting site. Thanks for posting it.
