Here are two totally different answers...my best friend has the same issue due to anxiety and a family member has the same issue and it's heartburn (diagnosed by a dr and w/out the typical symptoms).

My family member is trying some over the counter stuff like Pepcid AC, as the dietary changes proposed to her sounded pretty impossible. My best friend is working on his anxiety in therapy...his pdoc said there was some med he could put him on, but that he would be pretty drugged when he took it so they have not gone that route.

I hope you are feeling better soon!!

thanks for the quick reply, i was Dx with G.E.R.D. by my gp... so i dont know if its physical or mental or both? i know that i nearly panic each time it happens tinking im going to choke on the food or inhale it to my lungs ?
i dont eat that much and have been trying to make myself eat more so this isnt helping hehe

do you recall the name of the medicine?
i have always thought that my anxiety is causing the gerd, but then again maybe i just have gerd with the anxiety .. so hard to tell, i will talk with my dr about it though asap

im also in therapy, she makes me feel better for the day but then the next day often times im back to where i started from :/

I am sorry, my friend did not recall the name of the med his dr. had mentioned...my guess is it was some kind of sedative to relax him. If he finds out, I will let you know. I know he also panics when he has this happen. I know I would too; it must feel awful!

I don't know much about G.E.R.D, but your thinking makes sense re: either one could be influencing the other. I hope your dr. is able to help you clarify what is going on.

And I know what you mean about therapy...I have been in therapy forever!

One gal I worked with was having trouble with stuff getting stuck and coming up and she had an enlarged thyroid that was causing problems. I have that same type of thing going on and I want to get a check up to see what may be causing it in me.

This can also be related to APs. Is the Zyprexa relatively new or have you been taking it a while? [or raised the dose relatively recently?]
Thanks for this!

yeah it really feels uncomfortable, like someone grabs you by the throat and squezes the food back up to your mouth, its not so painful but shocking and mentally disturbing? it feels like you are going to choke or suck it down the wind pipe if that is even possible..
im glad and sad at the same time that im not the only one experiencing it, atleast hopefully its something that can be fixed easily

i started zyprexa zydis about a week or 2 ago, ran out of the samples and was off for a couple days, then got 5 more new samples and should be getting the whole script soon..
i started on 15mg

when i was taking lithium i had my blood work done and with slightly elevated thyorid hormone.. i figured it was the lithium, but maybe another test is in order..?

it seems to happen when i feel worried, or extremely aware of my self... if that makes sense, so i think it has something to do with my panic disorder.. but at the same time an enlarged thyroid could be it too? geez isn't all this health stuff just a blast?!

i really havent experienced any bad effects from the zyprexa that i know of... sometimes i feel a craving to take it early for some reason, and it doesnt knock me out... i think i would have rather tried my 'cocktail' i mixed up instead of his but i figure i let him have a shot then maybe like a game i can take a shot at it hehe

im taking whats in my cig currently, my cocktail that i thought up is:

Trazodone - for anxiety, depression, sleep disturbance
Ritalin - dopamine, depression, fatigue, and lethargy
Diazapam - PRN for panic disorder
Neurontin(?) - stabalizer

a rough draft... what do you think?

i follow the rules and am a good boy so im not using anything and even quit drinking, which suprised me.. i still smoke the green though, wouldnt get by without it

there were other meds i was thinking of but cant think of their names at the moment..

Difficulty with swallowing is known for APs, but particularly for olanzapine/Zyprexa [as well as Seroquel/quetiapine], I have seen it come up more often.

It is, in fact, one of the things that should be reported to your doctor when taking APs, as it could possibly indicate potential for further problems- EPS [extrapyramidial symptoms, which involve movement disorders and dysfunctions].

As was mentioned, there are many possibilities for your current issues, possibly a combination of more than one.

It would be prudent to contact your prescribing doctor and let them know of your difficulty- tomorrow sounds like a good idea, yes.
Thanks for this!

i will be sure to contact him tomorow, do you think he will take me off the zyprexa? i never really wanted to take it anyway... and if the zyprexa is causing it would that mean high chance seroquel will too?

ok so i have an appointment with my GP tomorow, because hes' the one Rx the bupropion i spose i have to see him about it and my klonopin

im thinking about bringing up my concerns and seeing if he can Rx me something till my next med-review with the Pdoc?
i guess what im wondering is what can he Rx me to help me not hurt so much from the depression pain and hypervigilance, today has been just horrid... i thought it couldnt hurt more, but it keeps going deeper and deeper and now i just feel crushed...

i dont know much about any of these things because im still relatively new to going to the docs... is there anything that can help me temporarily that would be ok with my pdoc? im going to ask anyway but thought if i knew what to talk about first would help... plus relieve some of mmy social phobia fear of even going...

i hope that there is something he can give me to help.. as it looks like i wont be able to see the pdoc for another 2 months or so.. i dont really even want the klonopin, they dont do the trick.. i just dont know what to do anymore

edit:
time to go back on some SSRI...? try SNRI..? i suffered discontinuation syndrome from the sertraline and afraid of them now...

Lots of things can cause problems swallowing. Your Dr. may want to do an endoscope which is where they basically stick a camera on a tube down your throat. You're knocked out for the procedure. When I had it done, they discovered I had a hiatal hernia, which is basically a hole in the lining between my stomach and my esophogus. But that didn't completely explain the swallowing problem so I'm now waiting for a test where I swallow barium and meet with a speach pathologist who specializes in swallowing problems. But it could also be my seroquel, because when I think about it, I started noticing problems, about the same time I started it.

Good luck getting it sorted out.

thanks for the reply, yeah i was supposed to see a specialist a long time ago after vomiting blood (think i drank too much the night before) but with no insurance or money what can ya do
i have only noticed it since starting this Zyprexa Zydis, i took zyprexa pill and didnt notice this... im sure he'll want to put me back on some stomach pill or something (i was taking ranitidine)
that one didn't help my gerd any so i just quit it

im gonna take a bunch of questions in for him and try to open up to him a bit more since everytime i have seen him i been super reserved / nervous... i just want results now so im just gonna be blunt about what im feeling hehe...

i've been out of the zyprexa 'zydis for a couple days now (2-3 i think) and it seems that the difficulty swallowing thing is improved a little, do you guys think 15mg is too high and thats why it was possibly caused by the AP? if they give me the pill form i may cut it in half for 7.5mg instead of taking the whole 15.. since its more of an adjunct treatment?
but maybe it was just my stress levels too? because i've been really stressed out lately

i read somewhere that over 10mg didnt show improvements in treating MDD? id just like to not take so much if i dont have to, ive read that some people are only taking 2.5mg as well..

well still experiencing this awkward/scary symptom ; found this article
Quote:
How Anxiety Causes Trouble Swallowing

One of the biggest fears that people have when they suffer from anxiety is that their anxiety symptoms are not anxiety symptoms at all. They worry that they may have a health problem that may not have been discovered yet, and that doctors have been misdiagnosing them with anxiety for years.
That's a big problem for those suffering from anxiety, because when you're worried that you have something more than anxiety, you'll find that your anxiety increases every day. You become more attuned to your body, and you start to worry more about your health, increasing your risk for anxiety attacks. This is a common problem of those that have difficulty swallowing.
How Anxiety Causes Trouble Swallowing « Calm Clinic

makes sense.. feeling it now, im feeling extra anxious and worried about getting my medicine so maybe its not gerd, and like i previously thought the anxiety causing these types of problems from my body beeing so tense

just thought i would update this as i find this disturbing
