If you ever want to look for the strangest people on earth, you should visit your local library. These people..ugh...they make me mad. When you approach them or take a seat next to them, they turn around and look at you. I know it's a natural instinct, but at the same time, they look at you like you're a criminal of some sort or as if you have a smudge on your nose or something. Can't they at least smile?

I think that this thread is more applicable to Western society in general, rather than simply the public libraries. I visit my public library all of the time!

I have noticed, however, that people are much more focused upon their little gadgets than anything else as they walk down the street, wait in cars, stand in line/s, etc. All fussing with a "Smartphone" of some type, they appear to be completely removed from the present moment.

The strangest people I ever run into are at the mental health office.. lol.. I probably shouldn't say that, considering I am mentally ill.. But I sit down next to this girl, and just said it was hot out.. I wasn't hitting on her, but she jumped up and gave me a dirty look, and moved to another spot.. I thought that was really rude.. And than I sit down by this guy one time.. And he was talking about cameras watching us.. lol.. I couldn't tell what he was talking about..

they ought to smile and stuff like htat. I mean, my area is mostly asians and hispanics, but still sometimes i get weird looks from others and i perceive them as racist, hostile, or hateful looks.

gosh, as soon as you walk into the library, they just look at you. it's as though they know what you've been doing or something. but tehy aren't any better if they have the same habits.

Sometimes a person is deep in thought, about their book or what kind of book they might like to look for that day, and so they are preoccupied.

Other people not smiling doesn't keep me from smiling, but sometimes I will add a silent thought like "Sorry that you apparently had lemons for lunch".... entertaining myself

their looks can be pretty hostile. they just look up from their book like that and it's like whoa, dude, chillax.

I know what you mean. I have noticed when I've done that too.. entirely unintentionally.
I think they have no desire to look hostile, they just are so absorbed in what they are doing.
Have you ever noticed yourself with a less than friendly expression on your face because you were so deeply involved in something that you barely pull yourself away from it when you have to acknowledge someone in some way?

Actually no, but some people may perceive it that way. nobody really smiles. they all frown and keep a stiff upper lip. it's like really?

I agree - it's all in the perception, not the intention
