Please, please use the trigger icon as needed. Please. I have read two posts in the last few days that I didn't need to read, because the poster didn't use the trigger icon.

If your post discusses specifics of abuse, or anything else that possibly could be upsetting to someone with similar psychiatric issues and history, please, please, pretty please with sugar on top use the trigger icon! It's the last icon on the right in the 4th row of "post icons" and looks like a basketball, IMHO, but it does its job -- of alerting members to sensitive information that may set them off -- very well. Please make good use of it. Thanks!

Hi candybear,
If anything I write needs a trigger icon-please don't be afraid to tell me in the post since I'm not accepting PMs anymore.
Sorry if I've ever triggered anyone. I'm never sure what's going to be triggery and what isn't.

Ummm

This may sound rude but

From the first few words people should be able to tell a 'trigger'.

I think we all try as hard as we can to remember that issue, but

It's a website, you can choose whether to read something or not after just a few lines in.

You're not in a bubble here - you need to cope with the unexpected, just as you do in real life.

Take care a gentle reminder

Ummm

This may sound funny

But I often actively try to read posts with trigger icons, just because I might have something to offer the person in the middle of whatever crisis.

When I'm expecting a "safe" post and find that's not the case, it bothers me.

Guess I'm not as mentally healthy as you ... sorry! We're all at different levels of "recovery" here.

Yes, but if a post is trouble for you, then just close it.

People try really hard here to respect such rules but in all honesty, sometimes when you're upset it is difficult to remember 'small' things like trigger icons.

So I believe it is up to the individual to monitor what they take into their brain (or not).

I am writing this to remind this is to be a "supportive" thread, not one to tear at other members.

What one person may consider perfectly be safe may trigger the heck out of someone else. Often I have read several paragraphs before finding something extremely triggering. A couple lines just doesn't do it because each person has a different style of writing and sometimes does not address the main topic in the first paragraph.

Be kind to one another. Be supportive. Use your trigger icon if you have even an inkling that something might be triggering.

Thanks Jan, I appreciate your caring. Just to say I appreciate dsf's opinions and I personally don't find them or her posts triggering,

take care,
Fuzzy

Hi Fuzz Bear,

I just meant that we are all so different and all have different levels of triggering. If there is any doubt at all, even a whisper of a doubt in your mind that something might be triggering, put that trigger icon on it before you click submit. (Not you, Fuzzy, I mean members in general.) That way everyone can be safer and no harm done.

Hugs,

Jan

I understand Jan

but at the end of the day it is someone else's pain you're reading

do you really have a right to be triggered by that?

i think not, cos the person who was posting was in a very bad state

the best we can do is try our best to remind ppl of triggers that may be forthcoming.

but i don't begrudge someone for talking about something i am sensitive too, usually, (i learnt a lesson on that)

so [unmentionable] i think we have to take into account everything, not just whether it is triggering an individual.

thank you Fuzzy a gentle reminder

i think we agree that everyone does their best here. I'm glad.

I think that Candybear asked for a gentle reminder for OBVIOUS triggers and even gave examples. That's something the guidelines actually ask for.

It is known that during upset, etc., it might be forgotten or overlooked and usually a member of the moderation team will slip in and place one on the post.

It appears that we're all in agreement on this one that everyone do/does their best. a gentle reminder

Cool, KD, thank you, but on the other hand, what is obvious to one person is NOT what may be obvious to the person experiencing something.

Just remember that in real life, you don't know what's gonna hit you, so best not to get too comfortable anywhere ...

As a close friend said to me

'Learn to bounce' [things off you that you may not like]

I think we're all agreeing on the same thing and just using different words.

However, DSF, you brought up a very interesting and thought provoking question. It was: but at the end of the day it is someone else's pain you're reading
do you really have a right to be triggered by that?

Do I have a right to be triggered by something someone else wrote? It's not something I can choose or even control. It's a basic instinct. It just happens because of past events or whatever.

However, if you've never been triggered, it would be very hard to understand and I can see why you would think that.

Wonderful conversation, my friend! a gentle reminder

Well said, and I think most of us do our share of bouncing a gentle reminder

However, for now we just do the best we can. No, there's no complete safety...you're right. However, we can do our best not to add to another's pain/upset by not placing a trigger icon on something we suspect might be hugely upsetting to another.

It appears this is causing some difficulty for some involved. I think we've all stated our thoughts. Please remember to keep posting to the guidelines which requests that we place icons on triggering posts or they might be edited.

Thanks to all!
